Gifts from the Fox

We started putting out some meat for a wild fox during the snow and Ice we had this winter. He, or she, is very small, and extremely wary. The past couple of nights the fox does not show up until after we have gone to bed - previously he was here earlier. Also, he left an exchange the past two nights. Last night it was this mouse, and the previous night it was a mole. I would love to understand his motivation. I don’t think this is a case of being too full, because in the past we have watched him make myriad trips away with the excess food to hide it elsewhere.

Anyone have any idea why he is doing this?

It's his way of saying, "thank you." He is just giving you a gift in return for your kindness. Cats are well known to do this also. They deposit dead birds, mice, etc., in open and obvious places (like doormats) for their human companions to find. You should feel honored, however he will be deeply offended if you don't take these gifts in and have them for your dinner.

Can you get us a picture of the fox?

Yes, Bill, how are your mousing skills?

About like my lady catching skills. Here is the only photo I have of him - this was early morning, through the window, and as soon as he saw me he left. I could put a camera and flash out at night and trigger it from inside, but that woud righten him, and the photo would not be good.

Bill you can see here he is "sizing things up" by the smell....typical fox..of course you have dogs at home ..so he must smell them..thats probably part of the weariness... and like Brent said its his way of saying thank you..I heard Farley Mowat ate these when he was up in the Barrens :)
