martinis Posted March 7, 2013 Share #1 Â Posted March 7, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) I've given this question quite a lot of thought over the last few years and still cannot understand exactly why a modern digital camera still needs a focal plane shutter except perhaps to keep the dust out. As the image is captured on an electronic sensor surely the exposure can simply be made by switching the sensor to "record" for the required time ? Many years ago I was also certain that somebody would introduce an LCD shutter that darkened or cleared to make an exposure but that never got beyond the research stage I believe. Advertisement Posted March 7, 2013 Posted March 7, 2013 Hi martinis, Take a look here Why do cameras still have shutters?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
pico Posted March 8, 2013 Share #2 Â Posted March 8, 2013 The universe is conspiring to piss you off. Â Really. The technology exists but you can't have it. . (See Red cameras for their take on using video to capture high quality still from video. There is something unsaid there. Can you find it?)
martinis Posted March 8, 2013 Author Share #3 Â Posted March 8, 2013 Sorry, it is a serious question, and I am the least p*ssed off person you're likely to meet.
roydonian Posted March 10, 2013 Share #4 Â Posted March 10, 2013 If you so a search for threads about the R solution, you should find one started my me. The first posting is my summary of a briefing given to the LHSA by Leica a couple of years ago. The need for shutters on future cameras was discussed during that event. So it seemed sensible to refer the original poster to my earlier message on this topic.  Were I a gentleman of leisure, I could have taken the time to search for my own posting, but in practice I was working to an urgent deadline. So I took a few minutes to point anyone who was interested to a possible answer.  Best regards,  Doug

Please accept my apologies, I see what you mean. I on the other hand have got to stop being lazy and read through that thread. There are 'only' 505 postings in reply but I imagine everything must be completely clear by the end or it wouldn't be worth you robbing a chunk out of my finite life?  Steve or do I mean ? roydonian Posted March 17, 2013 Share #9  Posted March 17, 2013 The information from the Leica briefing was contained in the first posting of the thread.  Best regards,  Doug

I must be reading the wrong thread because all I find in the first post is 'when' cameras may do away with shutters, not 'why' they need a shutter now?  Steve
