craigrmurray Posted March 26, 2007 Share #1 Posted March 26, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello everyone. I need some help. The older (60s - 80s era) 35mm Summilux (Cat. #11870) was my main lens on the film Ms. It used Series 7 filters that mounted inside the 12504 hood, which then snapped onto the lens (same thing for that era's 'Cron). Neither Schneider (who makes or distributes B&W filters) nor Leica have listed any 486 or IR cut filters in Series 7 size. I know many of these lenses are out there, and I haven't seen this topic discussed on the LUF. There are too many other lenses out there, that precede in importance, my buying a new 35 'Lux. Any suggestions out there on this topic? Live well and prosper, Craig
Advertisement Posted March 26, 2007 Posted March 26, 2007 Hi craigrmurray, Take a look here Series 7 IR Cut (486) Filters for M8. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
robsteve Posted March 26, 2007 Share #2 Posted March 26, 2007 Craig: Just get your dealer to order one in the series 7 mount. B+W will put their filters in any mount that you want. I did it in the past for a series 5.5 filter used in my 400mm f2.8 APO-Telyt.
gravastar Posted March 26, 2007 Share #3 Posted March 26, 2007 Willkommen bei Foto Huppert list the B+W 486 filter as being available in series 7. I have bought many 486 filters from them with excellent service. You may want to check that your 35mm pre-ASPH Summilux will focus to infinity on the M8. Mine won't quite reach infinity due to the rear shield being slightly too long. I purchased my lens off of eBay and took it to my local dealer where I compared the lens with two he had. The dealer lenses were OK. Subsequently I machined down the rear of the shield on my lens but even then it was too long. Any shorter and it wouldn't have provided protection for the rear lens element. So I'm wondering if there's more than one mount\optical design. From the serial numbers both the dealers and mine were the latest version. Bob.
russell Posted March 27, 2007 Share #4 Posted March 27, 2007 Ditto to what gravastar said. Got a series 7 486 from Foto Hubbert. Mine doesn't focus past 3 meters. I think it isn't that it's too deep but that the bit at the back is too fat. I'm thinking it seems to be the ones made in the 1980s that have this problem. colorflow Posted March 27, 2007 Share #5 Posted March 27, 2007 I have the same lens in black. I don't see it in Leica's list of lenses that can be coded. Is that correct or did I miss it? Alan
Irakly Shanidze Posted March 27, 2007 Share #6 Posted March 27, 2007 the sulution is easy. get a 49mm slim B+W 486 filter in black mount, and put it in the hood instead. I just did this.

colorflow Posted March 27, 2007 Share #9 Posted March 27, 2007 That particular lens cannot be coded. That's what I thought. Wonder what if it is hand coded as any of the 35's? Has anyone tried it? Alan
craigrmurray Posted March 27, 2007 Author Share #10 Posted March 27, 2007 Thanks, everyone, for all the great advice. My M8 is in Solms right now for the big fix, so I can't check focus at infinity. Also, I hadn't checked the list closely to see if could be coded -- I thought lenses longer than 28mm didn't really need to be coded, anyway. BTW: I had only checked B&H's and Schneider's web sites for 486 filter availablity, didn't know about Foto Huppert. Also, which department would I e-mail at Leica? I've never dealt with anyone there except for service. Live well and prosper. Craig
