iedei Posted February 16, 2013 Share #1 Posted February 16, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) i was puzzled to recently read that a batch of M5s were produced in 1992 as a 'tribute' or a special edition reproduction by Leica. does anyone know anything more about these cameras? were they the exact same camera? or was there something different about it? this is all i could find: http://www.liveauctioneers.com/item/4494223

andybarton Posted February 16, 2013 Share #2 Posted February 16, 2013 No mention of such a thing in the 8th Edition Leica Pocket Book, but 20, with serial numbers, are referred to in our wiki http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-wiki.en/index.php/M5
Michael Geschlecht Posted February 16, 2013 Share #3 Posted February 16, 2013 Hello Everybody, These cameras were mentioned in LFI at the time period they were produced. They were a special order. POSSIBLY for the King of Thailand, Sultan of Brunei or someone in the Middle East. Best Regards, Michael

iedei Posted February 17, 2013 Author Share #6 Posted February 17, 2013 Uhm... so is it even possible they are "gold editions" ? Luigi: as far as i know so far, they were all finished in Chrome and not in Gold....but i don't know for sure! I would imagine these versions must have had something more special than just the usual M5s.....although in the link i provided in the original post, there is a picture of one of these 1992 M5s and it looks virtually identical (from what i can see) to a standard M5. Hmm!
wizard Posted February 18, 2013 Share #7 Posted February 18, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) I do know that Leica made a batch of SL2 cameras in the early Nineties, reportedly from spare parts. So maybe they did the same thing with the M5. Andy
Torquatus Posted February 18, 2013 Share #8 Posted February 18, 2013 wow that is VERY cool....i would love to get that article in LFI somehow. any idea which issue? thanks michael! This made me curious, so I did a fast search through the 1992 LFI issues. Unfortunatley without a hint to the 1992 M5's. Will look through the 1991 & 1993 issues shortly. philipus Posted February 20, 2013 Share #9 Posted February 20, 2013 Puts in his Chronicle only says that a small batch of 20 was made in 1992 without explaining why (and, interestingly, places the M5 outside of the chronology of the other M cameras, under the heading "Unusual M-cameras"...).
