rramesh Posted February 19, 2013 Share #81 Posted February 19, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Isn't there also something to do with taxes and tariffs? If it shoots for longer than that, it counts as a video camera and attracts different taxes. Now I know why Leica is so expensive. It's a seeing eye medical apparatus. I wonder if I can buy my M through medishield.

macpants Posted February 19, 2013 Share #85 Posted February 19, 2013 I know that waiting for a Leica product, especially a new launch, is inevitable. The thing is a new M9P,MM or even an ME (unless you're really lucky) is going to involve a wait. What I don't understand is how, with this relatively minimal supply of new or even used stock, the Leica boutiques and specialist shops survive. The M's are rarer than hens teeth and the Cron's and Lux's the same. What on earth do the dealers do to keep the books balanced? Especially the ones that don't sell Japanese products. thrid Posted February 19, 2013 Share #86 Posted February 19, 2013 Thrid, Actually there is still quite a difference in that the M240 can only achieve 30fps in VGA (640x480) mode and not in 1080P. (See Leica Specifications for M240) True. I missed that. Since the sensor is capable of supplying enough pixels it would appear that the processor can't process the requisite data. The fact that it is a 24MP sensor is irrelevant in that 1080P is only 2MP and VGA is only 300KP. Yes and no. They are not cropping a HD window out of the 24MP sensor or line skipping. Apparently they are averaging the whole 24MP down to HD. (Jesko von Oeynhausen http://tinyurl.com/cukt622) So, I assume they are processing all 24MP to get to HD res @ 24p. If that is true, then that is a lot of data to crunch. Leica claims that this approach leads to less problems with moire / aliasing, which is an issue with many other cameras, who line skip (Canon, Sony, Nikon). IMO that's a pretty big deal and should result in a very high quality image, even if it is 24p max. Personally I would prefer a very high quality 24p over a line skipped 24/30p, which can be problematic with shooting things like trees etc. The Leica is only processing at a maximum rate of 9mp/s (640x480x30) and the Sony is processing at a rate of over 120mp/s (1920X108X60). To be fair, the Leica M240 can achieve a better data rate at 1080P by limiting frame rate to 25fps (1920x1080x25) or 50mp/s. It is not processing 24mp times 30fps as your post would imply. Is Sony line skipping, pixel binning or averaging the full res of the sensor down to HD? That would make a difference in how much data they really are processing. algrove Posted February 20, 2013 Share #91 Posted February 20, 2013 Time to start a Photokina 2014 speculation thread? Also, sad to think of it-time start putting your name the "next M" list at your favorite Leica dealer.
hoppyman Posted February 20, 2013 Share #92 Posted February 20, 2013 April is currently being put forward here (Australia) as likely start of deliveries. Our national distributorship is changing just about exactly when the first M stock is likely to appear. However I have been assured by both the dealer who has my order with deposit and the new distributor that the transition will be seamless regarding existing orders. I'm told that people at the top of authorised dealers' lists ought to get delivery within 2 months of the first arrivals. I would hope that each dealer gets at least one or more from that first tranche. At least that is my plan My view is that an early pre-order with deposit and preferably where you have an established relationship is the best strategy for receiving your order more quickly. At least that has worked fro me previously. I received both my M9 and the Summilux 35 ASPH around six-eight weeks from the official announcements and the dealers then accepting orders. I spoke with another dealer very recently who offered to place me on their list with no obligation or deposit. I think that there would have been maybe thirty people ahead of me. To paraphrase that dealer, these lists mean nothing until they have some stock to sell. I imagine that they (and other dealers) will have ordered some stock and may receive a portion of their order and will then phone their way down the list until they have no stock. Shouldn't take long I don't expect that they placed an order with the distributor for thirty bodies based on those expressions of interest. I doubt that they will get to number thirty one anytime soon
rirakuma Posted February 20, 2013 Share #93 Posted February 20, 2013 Hi Geoff, I think I remember sometime ago you mentioned that you were on top of the list for an M at your local dealer, since you're in Brisbane I'm guessing that's camerapro? I placed an order earlier this year and I was told that I should receive the M sometime around May however this was a long time before Leica announced the delay. I hope the preorder list isn't too long and that I can still get it around May.

I agree. The dealer may have a list of people interested in the camera but when one arrives, there is no rule which says they have to work down the list in the order in which names were added. In the finish, they will offer cameras to whom they want to. I would do exactly the same. A show of commitment works wonders.
krooj Posted February 21, 2013 Share #95 Posted February 21, 2013 I wonder if part of the reason for this delay is not just firmware, but to ensure channels are appropriately stocked for launch? I'd guess by now that Leica could have canvased their official dealers for confirmed pre-orders (money down) to get a reasonably accurate figure for the number they need in-channel right away. Just thinking out-loud.
algrove Posted February 21, 2013 Share #96 Posted February 21, 2013 Thinking out loud on this point is but wishful thinking. Any business that has inventory to sell right now will ship it right now, not stockpile it. If the problem is overheating with video then it might be a while since that could be much more than software. They just can't get a Final OK from Engineering. I've recently bought some studio equipment from them and have had excellent service thus far. I don't think that Leica Camera has announced any delays though. They told us all early this year I think and the rest is speculation or interpretation from folks who are understandably keen to get their new M's. The new distributor is not yet in operation but April is the best estimation I have heard recently. I don't have any special insights of course. Best to ask your dealer. Guest WPalank Posted February 23, 2013 Share #100 Posted February 23, 2013 Just got a call from a someone about something (please note the thread title I am posting in), and things may not be as dire as everyone is thinking. I had to confirm with this someone that he/she hadn't had a recent stroke. That's all I can say for now.
