On a recent trip to the Maldives, this was one of several fruit bats that flew around the hotel. These bats are active in the daytime, amusing and terrifying the guests. This particular one had a wingspan of about 1 meter. This was a lucky shot.

Terrific, and all the more so when one knows how difficult it is to capture them on the wing. Bats are among the most misunderstood and wrongfully maligned of creatures. I've handled fruit bats, which are rather sweet. Bats tend to be good, attentive parents, and many species significantly hold down insect populations.
