janki Posted January 30, 2013 Share #1 Posted January 30, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) For nearly 65 years, the fire boat "NØKK" was on duty against the “Red Rooster” here in my hometown Stavanger. The boat was very important at a time when the fire trucks had limited capacity and the public water network was weakly developed. The boat is now retired. "NØKK" is the Norwegian word for a mythical troll-like figure that lives in lakes and streams. The boat was built in 1939 as a so-called relief work project at a yard here in Stavanger. The boat represents a turning point in time with regard to construction methods. This means that the very hull is riveted together, while the superstructure is welded. The hull is built around two powerful 12-cylinder pump engines providing 2 x 240 Hp and producing 2 x 7000 liters (2 x 1820 US gallons) of water per minute to three water cannons or 18 hose connections. The boat also has sprinkler systems for self-protection. The propulsion machinery is far more modest with two 8-cylinder engines providing 2 x 160 Hp.
