I want to go wide...

Any suggestions on going wide on a budget? I have an M9 and sometimes 35mm just isn't wide enough and stepping back isn't always an option.

I'm on a budget as I have blown my allowance on the M9 35mm cron and a 90mm Elmarit so I need to have a cost effective option. I see the Voigtlander 21 f4 is a bargin, I don't need a fast lens but I also hear that there are issues with some colour shifting, this might not be a huge problem for me because I take mainly in B&W but sometimes you need a bit of colour in your life....

All and any advice is welcome

I recently bought an Elmarit 21mm Pre-ASPH and am completely enamoured with it....I can't even get myself to put another lens on the M8 now! just love it....

shooting wider is a lot of fun....it's harder in many ways, but can be more rewarding IMO

The usual circumstances when I've felt I needed something wider is when I'm out on social events - at a party somewhere, or at a dark restaurant, etc. Usually when there isn't enough space to back up to get everyone in a photo. In these situations I'd need something faster than f/4.

What do you guys use your wide angle lenses for - street, landscape?

just street and city for me. works like a charm. i agree F4 is a bit too slow...especially as i love to shoot in the evening/night.

The Zeiss 25/2.8 is sharper than a sharp thing.

heh.. sharp things, the standard for camera lens sharpness since the first thing was sharp.

just street and city for me. works like a charm. i agree 4 is too slow...but 2.8 is mint.

f/2.8 would be pushing it for my M8.2 with its limited ISO. I feel I can't really go higher than ISO 320, max of 640 but only in the rarest of circumstances. I have a f/1.4 which does a much better job in low light situations.

My 90mm elmarit is f/2.8 which is great for daytime outdoor shots though.

well, F2.8 is very fast for a 21mm lens......and i have found it to work really well with a slow shutter speed. The good thing about the E60 21mm is that it is a big lens....leading to much better stability allowing you to shoot at slow shutter speeds without blurring or shaking as much as smaller lenses. i don't own any other lenses slower than 2....

I guess so, about wides and speed.

The one thing which took me a long time to learn was that you're not going to get much shallow depth of field anyway with a wide angle, so being able to open wide for that reason would be pointless more or less.

Maybe a fast 35mm might suffice for my purposes.

shooting wide is definitely not for shallow depth of field....which is why plenty of people are happy with F4 lenses.....shooting wide is about the cinematic experience rather than the isolation of subject matter.

Remember that on an M8, a 35mm lens is effectively a 47mm lens....so 35mm on an M8 is not wide at all.

Hey now, I've never heard wide angles described like that before, I think that would help greatly in my approach to wide angles now, that's great.

Albeit - I beg to differ that isolation of subject matter can't also be a cinematic experience.

Yes I knew that. I meant 35mm equivalent on a full frame. My only lens on my M8.2 for the past couple of years has been the Voigtlander 35mm f/1.4, I really wanted the 50mm equivalent (or the closest to it).

i agree...isolation can also be cinematic---just in a different way. i also had that nokton 35mm f1.4 as my only M8 lens for a while....a good lens.

Thanks for the responses....

The thing is, my main lens is the 35mm cron, which is fast enough and wide enough for normal walking about town day and night. However, I want a wide one for the occasions when 35mm won't do. I don't want to spend a fortune and at the same time don't want to buy a donkey of the lens.

Anyone had any experiences good or bad with the CV 15 or 21?

Well put. I understand the blatant sex appeal of the Summilux at 24 and 21, but in practical use? Elmars at f2.8, and Summicrons at f2 would get bought, right?

I have the 15/4.5. It's a great lens. Most of my experiences with it were on film where the color shifts weren't an issue.

After I got an M9, I profiled it in CornerFix and that appears to fix the corners just fine. I haven't used it except for the testing mostly because I've been cooped up inside with a newborn.

15mm is pretty extreme though, depends on your taste. But on an m8, it might be a good fit. For full frame, the Zeiss viewfinder is much superior to the CV one.

The 21mm is supposed to be very good.

As an example, admittedly on Velvia:

Whats your expectations and usage except budget? Flare, distortion, colors, bundle with Cornefix, rendering, resolution, etc...?

I have had the CV 15, the Zeiss 18 and the Leica WATE. Of these the CV is the best bugdet, most compact, some less resolution, not to bad on flaring and distortion is good enough for archietcture, The color shifts of CV 15 are IMO to bad without Cornerfix, with Cf its good enough for all except snowscapes. The fallout in corners makes the CV a bit difficult for low light photos and snowscapes since one have to amp more and hence increase noise.

Zeis 18mm is the same as CV 15, except better resolution and less compact.

Best of luck. P.S. you might want to read answers above since many has posted answers on CV 15 and 21.
