A couple of questions about used lenses

There are only a few places that I know of to get used lenses in the US, Ebay, B&H, Adorama. Does anyone know of any more? I am looking to get a used 50 lux or a used 75 lux. I did find one at a local store in michigan that is selling a used Mint 50 ASPH lux, not 6 bit coded for $2375. Is this a high price for a used 50 lux? It seems high to me as it is not even coded and a new coded one goes for $2850 at B&H. But I am not sure what exactly they are going for used as they seem hard to come by and new to the world of leica.

Thank You,

Jennifer

Check these places on most everything is on line . Just google there names and 2375 non coded is too high. Remember though for the cyan cast 35mm and wider your going to want to think about coding or have lenses hand coded witha sharpie or other means

Jenny,

Europe has very serious dealers thet deliver worldwide: take a look at leicashop - Wien or Rahn - Frankfurt, both on the Net

Jennifer,

There are lots of stores that sell used Leica lenses. And there is EBAY. Here are a few websites you can check out:

tamarkin.com

kurlandphoto.com

photovillage.com

popflashl.com

All are recommended. I've had good service from each. They are all knowledgeable about Leica, and you can return an item if not satisfied.

You may do better than the price you mention, but the M8 has made M lenses go at a premium.

members.aol.com/dcolucci/a.htm is a price list based on recent sales of 2nd hand M lenses.

Best,

Mitchell

Jennifer, Not comprehensive, but I'll pass on my experiences:

Adorama -- Bought one used lens and I thought the condition was over-rated. They accepted the return with no questions asked and refunded my money.

B&H -- Bought two used lenses (latest 21mm Elmarit and 35mm Summicron) at fair prices. Both were like new and no problems. I suspect B&H often downgrades some slow moving new lenses to "used-demo" status just to clear the inventory.

Photo Village -- Bought one used Tri-Elmar. Rich Pinto was very helpful in that his staff had advertised the lens as an older version when it was in fact the latest version. Due to the mistake, he let me have the lens at a very good price.

Bottom line -- I don't think you can go wrong with any of these dealers. I'm sure that others have had good experiences with other dealers, also. It's always prudent to check the returns policy before you buy.

KEH Leica User Forum know for being very conservative in their rating. Items are ursually better than their rating.

I believe that when it comes time to clear out slow moving inventory, they lower their prices not by marking their products down further but by reclassifying them as being in a lower grade of condition.

As a result of this, I have been able to buy some "bargain" class lenses from that, upon close inspection, appeared to be nearly new. I have never had a complaint about anything I've bought from them.

I am not sure if there are really enough used 50 Lux Asph copies on the market to actually establish a price properly. I have never seen one used, and I am constantly looking to see what goes on sale. If the lens is in good shape, and it is worth it to you, you should consider buying it. You may not find another used one for sale for a long time.

I was visiting Photo Village in NY the other day. They had very few used lenses available. I hadn't been there since before the M8 came out, they used to have alot more inventory pre M8.

Yes it seems the pre M8 there was a lot of glass out there and it is getting harder to find used lenses at a good price. I'm glad i predicted this before the release of the M8 and got some of them before it came out for the most part.

As Guy says, deep trouble...

Don't forget by trolling the forums one can often get hints. You feel like you know the provenance of the lens despite having never actually met the seller. I'm playing with a new lens this weekend (CV15) obtained in just that manner (and it is awesome- an M8 point and shoot!)

You'd think that would stave off the hunger a bit...no way...need more glass....need more glass...they shold have a leica rehab forum...

Peter
