It has been said that the Soviets (FED) had produced forged copies of the Leica in order to weaken the nazi industry. No evidence has ever been provided of the reality of this assertion, but the fact is that next to the numerous private "re-facings" of Soviet cameras with the Leica logo, we have seen quite a lot of originally "Leica" engraved FED cameras. We just found these comparative shots of a Leica II and a "Leiky II" we had in our Fontenelle collection.

Here are some obvious external differences :

On the top fairing of the Soviet fake, the engravings are "fatter", the accessory shoe lacks both the front raised stop and the lateral raised securing "rails", the release button is different, and there is no arrow engraved on the winding knob.

On the front, the four visible screws are not painted, the upper right corner of the viewer's window frame is not rounded, and the fairing under the speed dial is right angled.

On the back, there are two instead of three top fairing fastening screws.

The most obvious characteristic on the "Leiky" is the triangular actuating rod of the telemeter, much different of the Leica "wheel".

And finally, the bottom plate misses the four screws on the sides and the two next to the fastening key, but displays three around the tripod mount; it also lacks the engraved arrow on the fastening key.
