The first thing I did was shake it to see if the top end wobbles or is loose like the second one. The fantastic news is that there is no looseness of any kind in the 3rd one which I bought from Adorama. I would like to thank Erik and Escar, intensely for letting me know that there was indeed something wrong with the lens. B&H have kindly sent me a prepaid UPS shipping label.  Perhaps it may be of benefit to some of you to know that the difference at f1.4 between the the defective lens and the good one is big in my opinion.  I made a video m4v file to show the loud sound the lens makes when shaken, but I can't upload it to this forum  The first photo is of the defective lens and the one below it is the good lens. Both at f1.4 and in the center of the frame. The focus was precisely set for both lenses, on the plants to the right of the 2 arches which are almost in the center of the frame. Sorry the pictures look really dull, it was posted for every ones information that a "loose lens is a bad lens". Â 01af you are very right it is shameful that Leica is ignoring their most "unique selling proposition" and that is quality control for every lens at every manufacturing stage, isn't that why they cost so much? Â Well Bill I also lost $1,500 but I learnt a lot about the effect of certain defects on the quality of the picture. Â What is sad is that Leica may not be aware or be listening. kokoshawnuff Posted January 11, 2013 Share #10 Â Posted January 11, 2013 Perhaps the reason you had such bad luck with your lenses, is the same reason you where so easily able to get 3 different copies as quickly as you did...maybe quality control has suffered a bit with the obvious increase in lens supply. If the trade-off persists, I'd rather it be difficult to get a leica lens than worry that the quality won't meet expectations set by the price and prior experiences. Last time I paid for shipping back to US because I was in a hurry. It came to a point where I just wanted a working lens, and didn't care about cost, just like a kid with a new toy. Â kokoshawnuff, you are absolutely right and I thought the same. I could definitely state that they hired new people or used those in M9 camera assemblers who had no experience in assembling lenses, this being due to a much reduced demand fro the M9. This reduced revenue may have led to reducing quality control. Just guessing of course. I bought the third lens from Adorama who had three in stock and continue to have it in stock.
