jaapv Posted March 23, 2007 Share #1 Â Posted March 23, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Playing around at UV and IR with Vivek, we slipped a Nikon flash onto the M8 to get some more IR - Flash flashed-camera clicked - red light didn't stop flashing - pulled the battery. SD card full, refused to be formatted. Put it into the RD1 same story. M8, with another card just fine.

robsteve Posted March 23, 2007 Share #2 Â Posted March 23, 2007 I can just hear the Leica support "You put a Nikon flash on the M8?"
albertknappmd Posted March 23, 2007 Share #3 Â Posted March 23, 2007 You obviously unleashed the dreaded NCV (Nikon camera virus) and this infected your SD card.... Prognosis guarded...
jaapv Posted March 23, 2007 Author Share #4 Â Posted March 23, 2007 I can just hear the Leica support "You put a Nikon flash on the M8?" Â It DID function, more or less. But it is interesting that it is possible to fry an SD card through using an inappropriate flash.
blado Posted March 23, 2007 Share #5 Â Posted March 23, 2007 I had a similar SD card experience (no flash involved) after simply removing the card and offloading images with a card reader. After putting it back into the M8, the camera reported that the card was full; format attempt failed (red light flashed for 4 or 5 minutes). I had to remove the bottom plate and battery to power off. Went through this several times with same results. Returning to card reader would show images intact. Suddenly, all was fine and I was able to format the card. I don't know if this helps, but the card itself was fine (and has been ever since). BTW, card is SanDisk Ultra II 2GB.
4season Posted March 23, 2007 Share #6 Â Posted March 23, 2007 It was probably just a coincidence that the SD card happened to fail when it did. Flash RAM has a finite lifespan, and yours croaked prematurely.
jaapv Posted March 23, 2007 Author Share #7 Â Posted March 23, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Same card as Blado's. Another coincidence?
scott kirkpatrick Posted March 23, 2007 Share #8 Â Posted March 23, 2007 I shot for an evening with an Olympus flash. Didn't fry anything or have any other troubles. Had to use manual settings, but from what I have read about the M8's flash automation, that was probably a better choice. So I also don't think flash was the source of the problem. Vivek Iyer Posted March 23, 2007 Share #9 Â Posted March 23, 2007 Jaap, My sincere apologies. I will try and make up for it. Â The Nikon flashes can be used with/without chords. I forgot to mask couple of the contacts (that does TTL) before I gave it to Jaap. A single point contact to trigger the flash should be alright (at least with my Epson R-D1s it works without any problems). Â Just too excited doing infrared shots. I am very relieved that the camera is fine. Jaap you are a big man with a bigger heart! Â Jaap, I am still waiting for your take your take on the UV shots. Â Here is a crop of Jaap's shot (taken with my Epson R-D1s) while the M8 was being tested for UV captures.
ho_co Posted March 23, 2007 Share #10 Â Posted March 23, 2007 Better to fry the card than to fry the camera! Â Use Wein Safe-Sync to guarantee that you do neither.
Shootist Posted March 23, 2007 Share #11 Â Posted March 23, 2007 I can just hear the Leica support "You put a Nikon flash on the M8?" I've used my Nikon SB600 many times on the M8 with no problems and no card fries. I'm just about to buy a SB800 to use mainly on the M8.
jaapv Posted March 24, 2007 Author Share #12 Â Posted March 24, 2007 Don't worry, Vivek, I managed to recover the shots on the card. I probably put the card itself in my box of CF cards, as I don't like using dodgy memory.Anyway, I was the one who slipped the cable onto the M8 and pressed the shutter. I'll play with the UV files I have here. I received yours and they are impressive....
