Kugelfest Posted December 31, 2012 Share #1 Posted December 31, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi A newbie question. When someone says Hp5 is a 320 film do they mean that one should measure incamera as 320 and use the develop times for 400 Or should times for 320 be used? 250swb Posted December 31, 2012 Share #2 Posted December 31, 2012 Expose at 320 and develop at the 400 times and temp. It really means that in some developers HP5 is a little bit slower than 400, but in other developers, such as DD-X it is 400 ISO. Steve
Michael Hiles Posted December 31, 2012 Share #3 Posted December 31, 2012 In these matters, a little skepticism is valuable. Your personal film speed should be whatever it takes to produce excellent shadow detail (there are more technical measures that you probably don't need). If you don't get good shadow detail, your personal film speed is too high. Development time guidelines are just that - guidelines. If your negatives are too flat or too contrasty, adjust the development time up or down (try 15% increments), until you get good shadow detail (i.e. your correct ASA) and good contrast (detail in your highlights). You can't avoid looking at your negatives and applying the thought process. No table or spec sheet is a substitute. Do it once, and that is it forever for that film and developer. Then keep repeating the procedure like an algorithm. Then you think about making pictures which is much more challenging.
