In his view "early 2013" can and will mean whatever Leica wants it to mean and he has more often than not been right. The camera I have ordered will arrive the day it arrives and not one day sooner. wok64 Posted January 19, 2013 Share #44 Posted January 19, 2013 For whatever it is worth: I received the confirmation this week for a seat in the Leica Akademie one day Workshop "Die Leica M im Test" (I assume I don´t have to translate this) on February 23. There is actually an earlier Workshop on February 22. I assume we can take this as a further proof that the Leica M is approaching its release date in February. So, expect to see plenty of images coming up end of February latest. Best regards, Wolfgang
JeTexas Posted January 21, 2013 Share #45 Posted January 21, 2013 B&H was spot on with their "expected availability date" when I pre-ordered the Sony NEX-6.
algrove Posted January 22, 2013 Share #46 Posted January 22, 2013 Sony and Leica deliveries could be way different due to Leica tardiness in releasing new product. I have no knowledge about Sony cameras.

algrove Posted January 25, 2013 Share #48 Posted January 25, 2013 OK, let's consider this. When does the Leica FY end? On 31 March 2013. Now I understand why it is possible to think that deliveries of the M-240 will probably happen during this fiscal year. Since Leica has much work in progress inventory they want to get some revenue generated on this M-240 inventory prior to their year end. So based on this supposition, initial shipments just might begin in March latest and probably the last half of that month.
johnbuckley Posted January 25, 2013 Share #49 Posted January 25, 2013 Lou - I am confident they are going to get the product out the door soon, but not because of Leica's fiscal reporting. It's a company with one majority shareholder and a private equity minority partner. This isn't like Apple getting the iPhone 5 into the market in time to report how it sold the first weekend. Leica needs to get the product out the door because their dealers are clamoring for it -- and so are we. The M was announced in September. It's nearly February. They'll get it out soon, but not to report earnings growth. Or so I pray!

andybarton Posted January 25, 2013 Share #51 Posted January 25, 2013 Leica haven't had a top M camera to sell for months. Private company or not, cash flow is vital to any company
stuny Posted January 25, 2013 Share #52 Posted January 25, 2013 Typically, private equity companies have limited patience, and if they don't get what they expected they consider liquidating their interests. Taxes on businesses in the US are assessed against not only earnings, but also against inventory. I have no idea if that is the case in Germany. johnbuckley Posted January 25, 2013 Share #53 Posted January 25, 2013 All points made in favor of: they have multiple incentives to ship the product, and I bet they will, within a matter of two or three weeks.
mjh Posted January 25, 2013 Share #54 Posted January 25, 2013 The M will ship when the beta test is finished, every bug found by the beta testers squashed, and the image quality optimised to everyone’s satisfaction. My money is still on a shipping date in March (as it has been for some time now).

k-hawinkler Posted January 25, 2013 Share #56 Posted January 25, 2013 Just like the last M9 firmware beta test I say the following part of mjh's sentence contains a qualifier: "every bug found by the beta testers squashed" Of course, I assume and expect Leica will do just that. A very different story would be if there should still be bugs they don't know about. Then I would conclude their testing methodoly needs improvement. dwbell Posted January 25, 2013 Share #57 Posted January 25, 2013 Then I would conclude their testing methodoly needs improvement. Only then? Personally, I already have 2 years worth of proof that their testing is, er, an area of opportunity for them.
Peter H Posted January 25, 2013 Share #58 Posted January 25, 2013 ................... My money is still on a shipping date in March (as it has been for some time now). If only all gamblers were winners! (I agree with you, by the way.)
k-hawinkler Posted January 25, 2013 Share #59 Posted January 25, 2013 Only then? Personally, I already have 2 years worth of proof that their testing is, er, an area of opportunity for them. Well, I think the M9 is a different can of worms with some design flaws. At the time, it was at the cutting/bleeding edge of technology and some problems had to be expected. Let's see how the M240 with double battery and more processing power turns out. I also assume Leica has learned quite a bit from their M8 and M9 experiences and incorporated that knowledge into the new camera, for example with the new sensor design. Anyway, I am looking forward to receive my copy after they followed mjh's statement above.
georg Posted January 25, 2013 Share #60 Posted January 25, 2013 The electronics and firmware of M8-M9 were not devloped by Leica, they seem to have done a better job themselves with the S2 than their previous "partner".
