Sony RX1 favourable review on luminous landscape

I can't see the point of that camera you might as well buy the RX100 and get the zoom and save a bucket of money. I have just bought an RX100 and the sensor is so sensitive that the faster lens will make no difference in low light conditions. DOF might be a problem but the RX100 at 1.8 and 70mm will give you all the blurred background you want.

This is my second digital camera after the Digilux 2 and cannot believe how much cameras have come on. It is pretty obvious to me that we are reaching the end game with cameras. We have more resolution than we need and we have quality that 5 years ago we could only dream about. What we are going to be left with is choices about form factor. Personally I have not having a viewfinder, but at this moment there is no choice in this form factor. Down the road I expect to see more cameras like the Fuji X10 and will get one of those.

I wonder what the future of digital photography will bring. Very few lenses perform well on the d800, so lenses need to be improved, but then 99.9% of photographers need no more than 36mp. The 24mp from my d3x was perfectly adequate for landscape. Many people new to photography see higher pixel count as the answer to good shots, which will keep the big dslr players upping the ante

Check out RX1 review on Ken Rockwell's site :p

He seems to be right about the surprising amount of barrel distortion, which I had begun to notice in images with straight lines near the edges. This Zeiss lens does not compare with the 35mm Summicron for the Leica M series, more like the X1.

I dare say most do not need more than 18MP unless you crop a lot.

Talking about lenses, I mounted an APO 4/280 R lens on my MM (prefocused it with a GXR+M mount) and posted a photo here and on another forum. One person on the other forum thinks that the 20 year old lens might be too good for the MM. Curious statement, but that's what one person thinks.

while people praise it I still think it's a fail....

too expensive, no viewfinder, no shutter dial

it seems it pretends to be something else but is still too much sony to succeed...

It's a stepping stone ! The interchangable lens version is coming, they won't have invested all this money to call it a day at one model. They will test the water and if there is demand in this sector, which there seems to be, then they'll keep pushing. If you add a viewfinder and interchangable lenses, it will represent a challenge to the image quality of the Leica's I'm sure. That doesn't mean they will steal any Leica customers, as people will stick with the red badge out of loyalty, or the fact that they enjoy owning using a Leica in the first place. They have the technical ability and can afford to buy in the very best technicians if necessary.

If they produced something tomorrow that genuinely beat the best that Leica had to offer, the red badge will still sell, it's clever marketing that would be needed to win people over. Bentley did it to Rolls Royce.

they will need a completely new mount with small autofocus lenses that match the image quality of M mount lenses which is hard to achieve.

besides...I think the reason the image quality of the rx1 according to sony is so good is that the lens is specifically designed for the sensor. they couldnt do that with interchangable lens camera. otherwise they need to stick to the same sensor for quite a few models...

and besides that I think the market is fed up with different mounts

-Canon

-Nikon

-Sony x 2

-MFT

-M

-LTM

-Fuji X

-Pentax

besides various others...

I dont think they would use the dslr lens mount. neither the quality nor the size would fit the new system...

as said sony might wait and see if theres demand for such a thing as the RX1 but the feature list is just too long with major points missing...

i don't think there will be an RX1 with interchangeable lenses. Sony already has an interchangeable full-frame camera called the A99. The RX1 is more or less just a gimmick to show that Sony is REALLY into photography these days....i think it's the old Minolta guys just flexing their muscles.

the challenge of creating a FF interchangeable lens is, by no mean, an easy feat. it is already optically challenging to create M system lens because the rear element is so close to the sensor causing light to come in at a hard angle. (in contrast to DSLR system, where the rear element is relatively far away b/c of the mirror box). it is even harder to create a optimal sensor to work with the already challenging FF lens.

can Sony overcome these challenges? yes. is it going to be worth their investment? i highly doubt it. but it is always nice to have alternatives. without them, what would remind us of the level of craftsmanship Leica has honed for almost a hundred years.

While I don't own one, I have been surprised by rather lack lustre images I have been seeing from the RX1. They seem reasonable in linear sharpness but really lacking in micro contrast. The Barrel distortion is too much for my liking and the colour and contrast is what leaves me feeling flat mostly. I had high hopes for it.
