mjh Posted December 20, 2012 Share #21 Posted December 20, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Is it not somewhat late in the day to handing out 25 units to beta-testers when shipping of the finished product is supposed to be quite imminent (if the expectations of some dealers are to be met)? Makes it look more likely that it will be towards the end of Q1 2013 before product hits the shops. Who says that shipping is imminent? Not Leica for sure. The end of Q1 2013 is a good bet indeed. Advertisement Posted December 20, 2012 Posted December 20, 2012 Hi mjh, Take a look here M-240 "Seeking Light". I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
bybrett Posted December 20, 2012 Share #22 Posted December 20, 2012 "My friend Dr. Ulrich Rohde has had access to the new M240 for many months now and has been kind enough to share images with me, as the M240 developed and he received multiple prototypes. I recently got his consent to share some of those images. He was also kind enough to invite me to visit him and shoot with the M240, an offer that I’ve so far been unable to take him up on, given year-end work pressures." It's all rather strange in my opinion that the Dr has permission but not the ability to post images online so instead they end up on a website by Raaj...? mjh Posted December 20, 2012 Share #23 Posted December 20, 2012 Lucky guy certainly! I don't like to be bitchy, but it does seem a bit odd to give the prototype to someone who can't clean the sensor (or take arresting images ) It’s not a prototype anymore. And this is a beta test; its goal is to find bugs.
bybrett Posted December 20, 2012 Share #24 Posted December 20, 2012 "These are from version 0.1.8.1 of the firmware. / So far the prototypes have been jpeg output only. I’m hoping to get DNGs as the firmware evolves and supports RAW output." Q3 Source: New Leica M (Type 240)
iedei Posted December 20, 2012 Share #25 Posted December 20, 2012 so basically all those photos tell us is that the guy who has been carrying an M240 around (A) takes the most boring photos in the world! and ( doesn't get out of the house much! Peter H Posted December 20, 2012 Share #27 Posted December 20, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) I'm even more in love with my M9 now! (Obviously and unfortunately, these test shots tell us nothing about the new camera's capabilities.)
plasticman Posted December 20, 2012 Share #28 Posted December 20, 2012 This must be some sort of internet joke? Those images look terrible, even allowing for poor post-processing and web compression. Someone's pulling our leg I think. Edit: I just checked-out the blog a bit more, and it appears to be serious. I'm amazed. Anyway, I guess everyone who wants one will say the images look awesome, and so on.
andybarton Posted December 20, 2012 Share #29 Posted December 20, 2012 I am amazed that Leica have let them be published at all. Assuming that they know about them...
banshy Posted December 20, 2012 Share #30 Posted December 20, 2012 I am amazed that Leica have let them be published at all. Assuming that they know about them... If so I would have serious doubts about their (social media?) marketing strategy.
dwbell Posted December 20, 2012 Share #31 Posted December 20, 2012 If the Doctor is, for example, an excellent bug tester. Software bug that is, and keen amateur enthusiast then I applaud the move. Taken as separate to the image quality question this is an important part of getting the M240 right. God knows I'm extremely tired of the crappy bug-fest saga that is Leica's current offering. Context people, context.
kidigital Posted December 20, 2012 Share #32 Posted December 20, 2012 I'm of the opinion that anything that pops up about the new M is an advantage for Leica. With such a rabid fan base of forum jockeys, pedantics, pixel peepers and hang wringers it keeps talk about the camera alive online. It's getting to be about that time when more things should be starting to bubble to surface leading up to the camera's eventual release. It's time to throw some chum to the circling sharks. mjh Posted December 20, 2012 Share #34 Posted December 20, 2012 If he is "just" a firmware tester, then he probably has no business releasing photographs. Probably, although Leica may not care about low-resolution pictures such as these. Even when some people are clamouring to be shown photographs taken with the new M, it would be best to just ignore them.

TshawM8 Posted December 20, 2012 Share #37 Posted December 20, 2012 I cannot believe that anybody would consider these photographs an accurate representation of this cameras capability. The exposures are awful, granted this is funny when considering that this Dr. claims exposure reading is superior, and the composition is nonexistent. I believe the quality of these photos speaks more to the fact that any photographer can take bad photographs with any camera more than it it does of the camera quality itself. I don't think anyone is critiquing the composition of what are obviously test snapshots. But just look at the images! Seriously.

I am not referring to people judging the photos themselves, but rather the camera. Some people have clearly indicated that, if these are photos from the camera, the camera is no better, or maybe even worse, than the M9. I am just saying that these pictures cannot serve as reasonable indications of the cameras potential.
charlesphoto99 Posted December 20, 2012 Share #40 Posted December 20, 2012 Awful pictures. Shows that it's money that talks in the Leica world now and not actual photographic talent. Hopefully they've gotten the camera into hands of people that can actually use it. Really pathetic images.
