MatthewG Posted March 21, 2007 Share #1 Posted March 21, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) OK so I updated with the latest firmware the other day and went out shooting like a have done for the last month. I began to experence what I can only describe as something sounding like the shutter was hanging up. Like the camera was set to C and the finger was depressed. Of course that wasnt the case an the M8 only took one Photo and it turned out great. The issue continuously got worst with the sound lasting anywhere from a second to maybe 10 to 20 seconds. Finally the M8 just quit with an error message saying "shutter error". Well of course I freeked out and turned the camera off and continued to walk and when I saw another chance for a shot I turned it back on and it worked? So I completed my day with it still acting up but never another "shutter error" and the sounds only lasting a few seconds. I was using Ziess glass, latest firmware, fully charged battery. It was cold but not freezing and the wind was blowing pretty bad. Please tell me not to send it back. That it will all work out. My friend and fellow Photographer told me I should post this, that people and Leica needed to know. He has two M8's and hasnt had this issue. Just wondering if there is anyone out there who has had the issue and figured it out without a return or exchange. Thanks \ Matthew

james_h Posted March 21, 2007 Share #2 Posted March 21, 2007 After I updated to ver. 1.092 I had a shutter error as well. It wasn't as severe as your case but it has worked fine since. Without wanting to sound like a broken record try a reinstall of the firmware.. regards Jim
Shootist Posted March 21, 2007 Share #3 Posted March 21, 2007 I just did a test of the shutter sound on my M8. At 1/125 the total shutter sound lasts less the 1 (ONE) second. That is first the shutter unlock sound, shutter opening, shutter closing and shutter rewind (the loudest and longest sound the shutter makes). If yours lasts for more then a second or even 1 (ONE) full second, when the shutter speed is anything above 1/125, there is something wrong and it needs to get fixed. This forum is not the way to contact Leica. It is a user to user forum and not a place to contact Leica. You need to call or email Leica in your country. marknorton Posted March 21, 2007 Share #4 Posted March 21, 2007 Depends on whether you regard South Carolina and Georgia as separate countries. They are next to each other.
Shootist Posted March 21, 2007 Share #5 Posted March 21, 2007 Depends on whether you regard South Carolina and Georgia as separate countries. They are next to each other. Yeah well where does it say he is from SC or even the USA in his post.

Hans Roggen Posted March 21, 2007 Share #7 Posted March 21, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) There are some threads about this error. I don't think it's firmware related. It happened to my M8 with firmware 1.09. Leica replaced it with a new one. Hans
jaapv Posted March 21, 2007 Share #8 Posted March 21, 2007 Hans is right, there is probably no connection between the breakdown and the firmware, except coincidental in time.
reven Posted March 21, 2007 Share #9 Posted March 21, 2007 The problem has nothing to do with the firmware. Send the camera back to Leica and you will probably get a new one back. Did that a month ago. I think leica has NO idea what cuases the problem otherwise they would fix it and not replace the whole camera.
billh Posted March 21, 2007 Share #10 Posted March 21, 2007 My friend and fellow Photographer told me I should post this, that people and Leica needed to know. I am glad you did post this. I also see another response where someone posted the same experience after installing the new firmware. There are some of us who are (perhaps unnecessarily) wary of installing the new firmware into cameras which are still functioning, so any issues others are experiencing are of interest. Clearly we are not going to get any news about this from Leica, so if a common denominator can be found and shared with us, it will likely come from people on this list. My guess is if we knew what was going wrong, someone here would think of a way to fix or get around it.
MatthewG Posted March 21, 2007 Author Share #11 Posted March 21, 2007 Thanks guys I just got back after shooting for about 4 hours and it still happened altho not as much. Like I say I love the camera and as long as it is still doing the job I think I my keep it. Just to let everyone know I am from SC and am spending a few months in England broadening my portfolio. Just so I know How long did it take to get the new camera back?
