Advertisement Posted March 20, 2007 Posted March 20, 2007 Hi wilfredo, Take a look here Quick Firmware Question. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
johnwolf Posted March 20, 2007 Share #2 Â Posted March 20, 2007 Not sure what's actually required, but Leica's instructions say to format the card in the camera before loading the firmware. Â John
mike prevette Posted March 21, 2007 Share #3 Â Posted March 21, 2007 I inadvertantly did it with photos on the card, it worked just fine. Of course your mileage may vary. Â _mike
wilfredo Posted March 21, 2007 Author Share #4 Â Posted March 21, 2007 A 2 gb card that's only 1/3 full shouldn't be a problem then? Â Wilfredo+
BillBrittain Posted March 21, 2007 Share #5  Posted March 21, 2007 A 2 gb card that's only 1/3 full shouldn't be a problem then? Wilfredo+  When the update is complete, I believe it might be deleted from the card. Possibly the M8 formats the card.  I'd make sure the images are backed up before proceeding.
nryn Posted March 21, 2007 Share #6 Â Posted March 21, 2007 Wilfredo, why not just transfer the images to a computer temporarily, perform the update as specified, then move them back? Is there something I'm not getting here?
wilfredo Posted March 21, 2007 Author Share #7 Â Posted March 21, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) o.k. I transferred the picture files and down loaded the firmware to the SD card. When I insert the SD card in the Camera the question on the LCD screen says: "Do you want to update the firmware to version 0.00?" Â It looks like I am having problems unzipping the files. Any suggestions. It appears that I have unzipped the file on the computer, but obviously the camera is not reading it. Help!!! Â Thanks, Wilfredo+
marknorton Posted March 21, 2007 Share #8  Posted March 21, 2007 The firmware update file should be in the root folder of the card - here's an example:  Welcome, dear visitor! wilfredo Posted March 21, 2007 Author Share #9  Posted March 21, 2007 Mark  When I click on the DCIM folder then the other M8 1_092 diagram appears, but they don't appear together as in the illustration above.  Wilfredo
marknorton Posted March 21, 2007 Share #10 Â Posted March 21, 2007 You have put the update file in the DCIM folder. Â You should put it in the root folder which you do by dragging it and dropping it over the (in my case) "Removable Disk (O: )" label.
wilfredo Posted March 21, 2007 Author Share #11 Â Posted March 21, 2007 Well I dragged it, and now for sure it is in the DCIM folder and I can't seem to get it out of there. When I stick the card in the camera, now I get nothing on the LCD screen. Â Wilfredo
wilfredo Posted March 21, 2007 Author Share #12 Â Posted March 21, 2007 I downloaded it again to my SD card and I'm getting the 0.00 message again. I give up. Time to go to bed. Any help will be greatly appreciated. I'll check in tomorrow. Â Wilfredo+
marknorton Posted March 21, 2007 Share #13 Â Posted March 21, 2007 Just drag the file icon (click and hold, move your mouse) and drop it on the drive icon (release the mouse).
Shootist Posted March 21, 2007 Share #14 Â Posted March 21, 2007 Wilfredo Download all picture off a card. Put that card back in the camera and then format it in the camera. Take that card and put it in a card reader connected to your PC. Upload the firmware to the ROOT of the card, IE Do Not place the firmware in any folders on the card. Insert that card in the camera along with a freshly charge battery, and of course put the bottom plate on, and turn the camera on. You will get a message on the LCD asking if you want to install/upload the new firmware. Select yes and wait.
larry Posted March 21, 2007 Share #15 Â Posted March 21, 2007 Wilfredo, Â The "root" is the top level of the drive, so you don't want it in any folder. Unfortunately, Windows is more convoluted than Mac, which makes it a little hard to describe. With a Mac, you simply drag and drop the firmware icon onto the SD card icon on the desktop. With Windows, you should see the update icon as shown in Mark's screen shot for it to work. Â Larry

The ROOT of a disk is the ROOT of a disk no matter when OS you are using. Mac Windows or Linux
larry Posted March 21, 2007 Share #17 Â Posted March 21, 2007 Ed, Â I use Windows at work and Mac at home, and like both. The file structure in this instance is easier to follow and access on a Mac because the drive icon shows up on the desktop. Both systems have their strengths and weaknesses -- this wasn't meant as a provocative post. Â Larry

And that every time I inserted a CD into the drive the icon for that CD would show on the desktop and would leave when I took the disk out.

It automatically downloads to the SD card, but going into a folder. How do I drag it out of there?????? When I tried doing that previously it seems to have gotten lost in computer limbo.  Thanks, Wilfredo+
wparsonsgisnet Posted March 21, 2007 Share #20 Â Posted March 21, 2007 Wilfredo, download the update to the computer, not the SD card. Â Use a freshly formatted SD card, as suggested above, and copy and paste the upd file to the root of the SD card. When done, you should see both the DCIM folder and the upd file at the root level. Â After you unzip your upd file, make sure that you remove any extension that follows ".upd" with a rename. When I unzipped my update, there was something after the ".upd" portion of the filename. Â G'luck.
