glenerrolrd Posted March 20, 2007 Share #1 Â Posted March 20, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Looking for some help. I have been experimenting with various diopters on my M8 and seem to had over tightened one. Since I use the 1.25 magnifier my guess is that when I put he magnifier on I had a little move leverage and overtightened the diopter. Unfortunately when I reverse the sequence the magnifier comes off and I have no leverage to unscrew the diopter. I don t think it stripped as I don t generally overtighten things. Any ideas short of leica or a camera repair?

wparsonsgisnet Posted March 20, 2007 Share #2 Â Posted March 20, 2007 Take a strip of paper, you can tear a long strip off someting, and wrap it around the diopter in the direction of the unwind. Â When you get a nice bunch of paper, you can grip more securely. Â Second, if you still can't turn it, a pair of pliers won't hurt anything because of all the paper. Â IF -- you get to the plier stage, be gentle. Don't get excited and rip the diopter right out of the screw fitting.
jlm Posted March 20, 2007 Share #3 Â Posted March 20, 2007 my diopter lens is threaded to fit onto the camera but is not threaded to accept the magnifier. It is one or the other.

Eoin Posted March 20, 2007 Share #5 Â Posted March 20, 2007 I don't know what Diopters and 1.25x mag you're using but my diopter screws onto the 1.25x after the 1.25 is attached to the VF. Both are Leica. I lost the rubber ring from the 1.25 the other day and now I have to use it with the diopter without glasses. Anyone know where to get replacement rubber rings?. farnz Posted March 20, 2007 Share #8 Â Posted March 20, 2007 If all else fails you could try gently applying a little warmth, say, with a heated, dry cloth or towel. If the metals are dissimilar then they will expand at different rates and may unscrew more easily. Â To help in future you might want to rub a soft-leaded pencil lightly on the thread because graphite is an excellent dry lubricant. Â Pete.
carstenw Posted March 20, 2007 Share #9 Â Posted March 20, 2007 On all M8s I have seen or heard of, there is a thread on the camera, where the magnifier goes, and a thread on the magnifier where the diopter goes. There is no thread on the diopter, so it is always the outermost item. Are you sure you aren't trying to unscrew the ring of rubber of the camera? Â My diopter did get stuck in my magnifier once, and when I got it out, my magnifier thread was mangled. I could screw the diopter in again, but it was not possible to tighten it any more. It would just turn and turn. I don't know if I threaded it in wrong, or if it cold-welded, or what. I am normally very careful with things like that. Anyway, my dealer just swapped my magnifier and sent the busted one back to Leica for examination. Presumably there will be a minor modification to the design at some point. Â I wish they used a mini-bayonet rather than a thread.
