I own the D2, and have only handled the (all-black) X1 model briefly in a Leica store. I was intrigued by the X1 that I saw. The X1's APS sized sensor captures great detail for certain shots where that is especially important to you, and will have greater low light capability as the ISO range on the D2 is very limited. The X1 that I inspected also impressed me by what seemed like solid, clean ergonomics and controls, and good build quality. It is also a great size for easy carrying / storage. Very sharp images, too, and nice Leica colors from those that I see posted online! Very tempting. Advantages for the D2 include the fast f/2 lens, the 28-90 tele range, an internally telescoping lens (probably less exposure to dust than externally telescoping models), a built in EVF (usable, but admittedly somewhat prehistoric now), near silent shutter, and traditional ergonomics/controls. As to images, I find the D2 to be tough to beat at close ranges, especially in B&W. Its handling and blend of qualities remains unique to this day. Bottom line is I believe these are two different animals, and a photographer could certainly find a place for both in their arsenal. I concluded for my purposes to hold on to my D2 as the X1's compact size was not so important for me. But at the prices you note today, why not just snag one and start enjoying it? Maybe I will too! The dust speck is virtually invisible even against a sky background, when the camera is used at an average f stop. Even when visible, it is easily Photoshopped or cropped (it is fairly near the frame edge). I was ecstatic and somewhat pleased that I got it for that price!
