Ok, so where does this lens rate?

I guess you realise this is a collector not a user given the ambitious asking price. Like most Catadioptric lenses, I suspect its results will be odd other than the area in the centre of the image, as long as it is in prefect focus. Otherwise for OOF areas, you will get the weird donut bokeh. I think it would be fair to say that the Leica MR Telyt-R 500/f8 did not have a very good reputation. I feel that the Kyocera built Contax 500/f8 is a little better but that is not to say it is good.

How much is an APO extender going to soften the 280mm? Since it's Leica engineering, am I going to be amazed at the results and sharpness or do Leica extenders tend to dull the image just like any other extender?

 

280 f2.8 apo-telyt-r with 1.4 apo-extender-r, R6, Kodachrome 25, scanned on Epson 4870 flatbed. I can see myself reflected off the bird's cornea on the original.

The Usual Suspects are selling this lens and although they're not known for underpricing their stock:rolleyes: this is impressive even for them.
