steamboat Posted November 27, 2012 Share #1 Posted November 27, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Weird problem my M8.2 with firmware 2.014 As I have tracked the problem down here's what was happening. When I looked at the pictures I realized the time the picture were taken was off. By a lot. Most of the time afternoon pictures were bumped ahead eight hours. A few cases the time was pushed ahead by 20 hours. I looked at my camera and the Menu and the time was off. I reset it and I still had the problem. But only with PM pictures. In fact, in the AM the pictures were the correct time without me changing the time in menu. Last night I found the real oddity. The time was once again off in camera. When I went to Menu/Time/Setting the hour read as 2011. No not the year and not "20" as in the hour being 20:00 but the hour was "2011". It should read "20". This morning I re-downloaded firmware 2.014 and re-loaded it into the M8.2. I'm keeping my fingers crossed the firmware became corrupted and this will be the fix. Any other ideas if this doesn't work? I guess a trip to New Jersey. The camera has had a servicing within last year, fyi. Anyway, keeping my fingers crossed that re-loading the firmware does it. We'll see this afternoon.
Advertisement Posted November 27, 2012 Posted November 27, 2012 Hi steamboat, Take a look here M8.2 "Time" problems. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jaapv Posted November 27, 2012 Share #2 Posted November 27, 2012 Internal battery getting dodgy, I suppose. Leica will need to replace it. It won't affect the performance of the camera, so in your place I would send it in after the trip.
steamboat Posted November 27, 2012 Author Share #3 Posted November 27, 2012 Sorry - a bit confusing how I write. The "trip" I referred to was sending the camera on a trip to Leica, New Jersey. After posting it occurred to me that, yes, it's probably a camera problem and not firmware. I have also had a 2010 era battery in my rotation of batteries which has been a bit erratic so I took it out of the rotation yesterday and so now I have all 2011 or 2012 batteries. Indeed, I agree, the internal battery might be due. My M8.2 is four years old this month. It's been used every day since new. Thanks for your quick reply! Jim-St Posted November 28, 2012 Share #4 Posted November 28, 2012 I had a series of very similar problems of erratic clock behaviour with my M8. It took two trips to Solms to get it fixed. The second time I sent with it a detailed log of the issues I'd encountered, and offered to send them files to illustrate/ corroborate (I took a number of pics of the clock on my wall, and the exif info showed how the camera's timing function was frankly weird!). I'd expected to be told they'd replace the internal battery (as Jaap suggests), but in fact both times they said they'd replaced the "processor". Clearly this didn't work the first time, as the issue recurred within a few months. But the second time the did something really effective, as the camera's clock was uncannily accurate when it came back. It was spot on when I put a battery in and switched on, and it didn't miss a beat in the following 6 months, until I traded it far a "demo" M9 last month. So I'd recommend you send it to Leica with a detailed account of the issues, and maybe offer to send corroborating files. Good luck with it. marknorton Posted November 29, 2012 Share #5 Posted November 29, 2012 I think you should try a menu reset; it may be the firmware upgrade has changed the usage layout of the non-volatile RAM so that the time fields have moved position and the year is showing up as the hour. steamboat Posted December 6, 2012 Author Share #6 Posted December 6, 2012 Thanks all -- Mark, I'll try the menu reset when I get a chance. I changed the time to Am/Pm rather than 24 hour but that didn't work. Perhaps the reset will work. Something's unhappy, but it's not a big deal. Funny thing is I check it pretty regularly but when I forget to check it the time will change. This morning instead of going forward eight hours it went back eight hours. First time for that. Again, thanks for the suggestions.
steamboat Posted May 22, 2013 Author Share #7 Posted May 22, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) So this thread coughs back up. As an update the problem still persists. It's almost always after 12 noon passes and the M8.2 clock jumps ahead either 8 or 20 hours. It doesn't do it every day. Sometimes it self-corrrects the next morning if I didn't catch the time shift night before. BTW, I've been doing a picture(s) a day project so keeping track of the time is important. It's an aggravating problem but not quite enough to get it repaired. I am wondering if anybody since I last wrote about this has had this "clock" problem with their M8 - in my case an M8.2?
