bideford Posted November 22, 2012 Share #1 Posted November 22, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi everyone - here is my first question for the forum! I know some of you may not approve but I have a bit of a strobist streak in me and having used off camera wireless flash on my Canon 5DII and Fiji X100 I thought it would be interesting to try it on the M8.2. I am used to using flash in manual (as TTL is not available with the X100 with my units and wireless). I have just got the M8.2 and only (for now!) one lens - after much pain I went for the 28mm f2.8 Elmarit-M ASPH - good for all round general use - but will struggle in low light (i.e. playing on an evening). I live in the UK so I'm not blessed with a lot of light when I get home from work at this time of year! Already thinking of lens number two (bad I know!) and this is likely to be a faster 50mm - better for my portrait needs and will be the lens of choice in low light. Can I use my (Canon 5DII) Yongnuo RF-600TX / RF-602RX units and 430EXII / 580EXII flash units with a Leica M8.2? Apparently the 580EXII does work directly on the hot shoe (not sure about the 430EXII). I seem to recall that perhaps I need the Nikon transmitter - which is a little confusing if the 580EXII does work on the hotshoe. If this is the case, I would presume I would still use the Canon receiver on the flash. Thanks in advance. James

kodaktrix Posted November 23, 2012 Share #2 Posted November 23, 2012 Hi James, I do not know about Your flashes. If I use flash with my M8.2 it is a Nikon SB-24 with SC-17 cable for off camera use, the flash either in manual or auto mode (no TTL). Works fine for me. If You want wireless slave flashes, Nikons SB-26 comes with slave sensor. These old Nikon flashes are reliable and cheap today- Oliver

Hahaha Posted November 23, 2012 Share #4 Posted November 23, 2012 Mayby not the most appropriate answer, but my M8 works well with a yongnuo 560 II .
Realist_classic Posted November 24, 2012 Share #5 Posted November 24, 2012 Yes, I can second the Yongnuo 560 being a cheap manual flash (I use the first model) that works well on my M8. I also occasionally use the original RF-602 radio triggers to remotely sync with two YN-560s. I made sure to get the Nikon version of the radio triggers, as the Canon version of the original 602s don't seem to communicate at all with the M8. mctuomey Posted November 25, 2012 Share #6 Posted November 25, 2012 My rig - assembled the flash unit for around $120: old contax coil cord, gordy wrist strap, and sf20, all under the control of my able assistant "lefty." James Theoretically, it should work. If not, it's not too cost prohibitive to swap.
bideford Posted November 27, 2012 Author Share #9 Posted November 27, 2012 Thanks all - I will add a single Nikon transmitter/receiver (looks like I will have to get a set) to the Xmas list. I will post the result on this thread. These wireless flash devices are a really cheap alternative and surprisingly work really well with my Canon kit.
