Okay folks,

 

I've been reading and posting alot on this forum; it is the most helpful forum I've ever worked with. The likes of Jamie, Guy, Eoin, Edmund, Jaap and too many others to mention is awe-inspiring.

 

I must admit, however, that while I consider myself fairly computer savvy, I don't know how to get a pic from photoshop prepped and resized to post it on this forum. Could someone write up a step-by-step for me so I can take advantage of this in th efuture.

The easiest thing to do is to get a pro-account at for instance Photobucket.com. Upload your Jpeg output there choosing an appropriate screen size and link to the forum. The other option is to resize your jpeg to 900 wide and apply an additional sharpening of 0.4 radius, threshold 1 and amount somewhere between 50 and 150%, upload that to a hosting site and, again,link.

Posting an image requires a little prep work in Photoshop to make it fit. The first thing to do is resize your image. This forum's rules limits the image size to 960 pixels. In Image > Image Size, change the size of the longest side of the image to 960 pixels. If you have not cropped your file, the short side should be 646 pixels from an M8 file. Make sure the Constrain Proportions and Resample Image boxes are checked. The resolution (pixels per inch) do not need to be changed.

 

When a file is resampled to a very small size such as this, you may need to sharpen it a bit. I run my Web JPEGs through the Smart Sharpen filter (CS2 only) at the setting of Amount: 20% and Radius: 1 pixel. You can adjust your settings to your own particular taste. (Use Unsharp Mask if you have CS1 or earlier.)

 

Save the file as a JPEG #8 Quality and close the file. Now take a look at it from your desktop to see how large the file is. If it's larger than 244Kb, it won't post on the Forum. To make it smaller, go to File > Save for Web to launch ImageReady. Click the 4-up tab to see how the file looks natively and at four different compressions. Make sure the JPEG pulldown is showing on the right, and check the ICC profile box. move the Quality slider to the left or right until the second box shows a size of no more than about 230K, then click Save and save your new Web-ready file.

 

(NOTE: You can also resize the physical dimensions of your image in ImageReady by clicking on the Image Size tab. This will allow you to change both the physical and digital size of your image from one window.)

 

I'm sure there are many other ways to do this in Photoshop, but this way gives you complete control of the size of your files, where it is critical for forum postings.

Of course that is true, Andy, who would contradict a moderator ;) ? But a hosting site enables one to upload to other sites that are not as accomodating. Plus, one can upload larger filesizes and that does impact on the quality of the upload. I feel sizes under 500 Kb lose quality visibly.

Yes, max 960 pixels and about 235 kb (in reality)

 

You will need to make sure your settings in your account control panel are set to Full WYSIWYG to get the best from posting, too.

All these contrbutions relate to prepaing a pic for posting, but I still have no idea how you actually post the prepared pic. Are there any instructions anywhere for the complete computer duffer?

Use my method, in the screen Photobucket provides there is an "" IMG" link. Copy the text and put it in your message. That is all. To upload photo's in Photobucket, register, open "my album" click the browse button, got to the jpeg you want to upload, choose the screen size and hit "upload" The photo will appear automatically with the text to copy ( it is the lower of the three and clearly marked).

 

The nice thing is that you standarize your method. You can use this method for other forums that work with a thumbnail/attachment sytem (like Rangefinder Forum or Fred Miranda's forum and many others), e-mail, blogs etc. as well as for this forum, that also accomodates direct posting of images.

Just to clarify my situation - although I know how to join a thread, I have no idea how to start one. I keep my digital images as JPEGs on CDs prodeced by the lab that processes my slides. I transfer my images from my digital cameras as JPEGs onto CDs using a device which reads the cards onto CDs. I make prints rom the CDs using Photoshop Elements 2 which came with my computer. Although I bought my first camera more than 70 years ago and have used Leicas fot more than 40 years, I acquired my first computer less than two years ago. I still find it the most user-unfriendly piece of equipment I have ever encountered. Surely there is somewhere a simple set of instructions for using the forum.

Here is how to post a pic when you reply to a thread. You must have the pic saved on your computer already. When you hit reply you will be presented with this screen:

 

Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here…

Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members!

 

Click on Manage Attachments and it will open this window:

 

 

Click on Browse and locate the file you want to post

 

 

It will show the address of the file on your computer. Then click on Upload

 

 

When you are finished click on Close This Window.

What it needs is for someone like a moderator (like me :) ) to sit down one wet weekend and write a definitive "How to..." set of instructions.

 

It is very easy to take for granted how to do something using this software, but when you don't know how, it can be confusing. Once you have done it a couple of times, it becomes second nature.

 

Leave this one with me.

BTW, IMHO, you live in one of the most beautiful parts of the North West, yet no one knows about it! Everyone trundles past to J36 on the M6, yet the view from the Knot, overlooking the Kent estuary and the railway viaduct on a nice day is superb.

Do I load the action onto Photoshop or is it a free-standing action?

 

How does one load the action onto Photoshop if one must?
