Leica I

As for collectibility it depends on many things. What more do you know about the camera, do you have details photos etc?

One thing though - do you intend to collect or use it? I would personally recomment the latter. Barnacks are great for unobtrusive street photo (among other things).

If you are unsure of whether the camera is worth what it is offered for (and I hasten to add that I try not to make a valuation here, which is against the forum's rules) then have a look at various dealers and see what they sell the same camera for. That usually gives a pretty good idea of the state of the market for a given model.

Ps. I guess the moderators will move this to the Collectors and Historica forum.

Unfortunately I don't have much more information and no photos. I literally just happened upon it in a small camera shop in Nagasaki. There is only really one other shop in town and it doesn't have one to compare. It seemed in reasonable condition though. I was just wondering if these cameras were rare and/or generally sort after. I would love to use it, it would be for my collection but it wouldn't go unused.

Sorry I wasn't sure where to start this thread, I'll be sure to start any similar ones in the other forum!

Thanks for your help.

My first thought is, make sure it's not a Russian fake!

Price is very much dependent on condition. You can search ebay for completed auctions (i.e. prices actually achieved) and search for Leica/secondhand camera dealers to see what prices they are asking, and compare with the camera you've seen.

This is a good reference http://www.westlicht-auction.com/index.php?id=174750&lang=3

Basically, Leica I is not a rare camera, though very interesting as a collectible, being the first Leica to enter the market : a milestone in photo history. Being rather common (at least in the normal version, with Elmar 50 mm 3,5) value is highly dependent on conditions, both mechanic and cosmetics, and by the presence of "collaterals" like bag, box, etc...

Here are some items a t awell known dealer : https://www.leicashop.com/vintage/leica-schraubkameras-mod-elmar-c-1000_1001_100103.html
