After many happy years with a Digilux 2 I've succumbed to the temptation of a bargain price Panasonic L1. I'm very pleased with it but could someone please reassure me that the whirring noise is normal. Its quieter (& in reality pretty faint especially) with OIS turned of but still there. Should it be?

Many thanks

I think what you are hearing is the OIS (image stabilization) at work. If you switch to OIS mode 2, it only works when the shutter is pressed. I did that, and don't really notice it any more - probably masked by the mirror/shutter noise.

I posted the same question on the german part of the forum on Friday. The answers were the same like here that it comes from OIS. The problem to me is, that I hear two different sounds. When OIS turned off the whirring noise disapears, but the second, a very faint whistling, remains. I mailed it to Leica service and I am waiting for the answer.

Andreas

Are you using the internal flash when you hear the high pithed sound? Could be the flash charging up.

John,

no it is without the flash, it could not be the charging of the flash. The whistling sound is very low, lower than the whirring noise.

I got an answer from Leica-Service. They said that OIS is making the noise. It does not matter whether OIS is on or off, it changes only the loudness.

Form my point of view it is also another sound, like I described above.

Andreas

At least with other PanaLeica's with OIS, the Forum members some months ago, and the manuals suggest the greatest OIS effect is in position 2, which only activates during exposure rather than at all times.
