Guest kahunap Posted March 18, 2007 Share #1 Â Posted March 18, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) After many happy years with a Digilux 2 I've succumbed to the temptation of a bargain price Panasonic L1. I'm very pleased with it but could someone please reassure me that the whirring noise is normal. Its quieter (& in reality pretty faint especially) with OIS turned of but still there. Should it be? Â Many thanks
Advertisement Posted March 18, 2007 Posted March 18, 2007 Hi Guest kahunap, Take a look here L1/Digilux 3 whirring noise. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
audidudi Posted March 18, 2007 Share #2 Â Posted March 18, 2007 Should it be? Â Yes, it's normal with these cameras. Well, my L1 makes a similar noise, anyway...
Guest kahunap Posted March 18, 2007 Share #3 Â Posted March 18, 2007 Many thanks for the super-speedy reply. Do you know what is making the noise?
London Lad Posted March 18, 2007 Share #4 Â Posted March 18, 2007 My DL3 does it but only with the OIS on.

Should it be? Many thanks  I think what you are hearing is the OIS (image stabilization) at work. If you switch to OIS mode 2, it only works when the shutter is pressed. I did that, and don't really notice it any more - probably masked by the mirror/shutter noise.
kuddel Posted March 18, 2007 Share #6 Â Posted March 18, 2007 I posted the same question on the german part of the forum on Friday. The answers were the same like here that it comes from OIS. The problem to me is, that I hear two different sounds. When OIS turned off the whirring noise disapears, but the second, a very faint whistling, remains. I mailed it to Leica service and I am waiting for the answer. Â Regards, Andreas

kuddel Posted March 18, 2007 Share #8 Â Posted March 18, 2007 Are you using the internal flash when you hear the high pithed sound? Could be the flash charging up. Â John, no it is without the flash, it could not be the charging of the flash. The whistling sound is very low, lower than the whirring noise. jdlaing Posted March 18, 2007 Share #9 Â Posted March 18, 2007 You are hearing the image stabilization motors in the lens.
kuddel Posted March 20, 2007 Share #10 Â Posted March 20, 2007 I got an answer from Leica-Service. They said that OIS is making the noise. It does not matter whether OIS is on or off, it changes only the loudness. Form my point of view it is also another sound, like I described above. stuny Posted March 20, 2007 Share #11 Â Posted March 20, 2007 At least with other PanaLeica's with OIS, the Forum members some months ago, and the manuals suggest the greatest OIS effect is in position 2, which only activates during exposure rather than at all times.
