I think you need to use the McGyver baseplate if you want to use the EVF and external microphones; at least, that's what I understood from the London video.

I'm not a buyer. I like the idea of live view (for framing and focusing a variety of non-CRF lenses), but seeing the camera with all that clutter attached left me very happy with my M9.

Cheers

John

John,

If that is the case, then that is fine, as I have ordered the multifunction base plate/hand grip along with the new M. However, someone else on another post was implying that the microphone did not couple to the m/f base plate but only to the top shoe. The M brochure is silent on this matter.

Don't know, Wilson. I was only going on that video.

I will be very interested to hear what your experience of the new M is. I'm going the other way, buying the Monochrom and then considering ditching my M9P (for purely economic reasons). Perhaps when this new technology has settled down a bit, I will look at trading the M9P for whatever comes next.

I like the new developments of the M, I just feel it is still sitting on the fence a bit. The next iteration will hopefully be a bit more comfortable in its own skin; less of a compromise.

Cheers

John

Frankly, I'm impressed by these 360k downsized jpg's.

Really? They look to me like any other F1 Noctilux shots made in very dingy light using a digital camera. The kind of stuff that impresses few people other than Noctilux/Leica buffs

Rather Skeptical of these images. They have a bit of banding noise much like a Canon 5D, not to mention the colors look a bit "Canon".

Why be sceptical? Hong Kong probably accounts for more Leica sales than any other city on the planet (there are three dedicated Leica boutique stores, including one at the airport) so it makes sense to showcase the camera there early.

As for the suggestion that the colours "look Canon", the worrying thing is that they look resolutely low-light Leica, complete with that familiar bias towards magenta. One of the great things about Canon sensors is that they're very neutral allowing pretty much any look that you want.

I would not be too concerned about things like WB or magenta cast at this point. The camera FW will inevitably be a number of iterations from what will be installed in the camera when it comes on sale. I personally would not even mind getting the camera with the FW as "work in progress," as it was on the M8 and to a lesser extent on the M9.

As one of the FW beta testers, I rather enjoy the testing and submitting reports process, then seeing the progress as successive versions come out. The white wall at the side of my house, must have been photographed almost as often as the Wailing Wall at one time, when we were trying to quantify and improve the red edges/corners on wide angles and the WATE with the M9.

If you don’t know how then you are not supposed to. (Apparently the general public never was.)

The thread (and all of its content) was for public consumption but the people who started it probably never expected their photography skills to be criticised so strongly. They probably asked admin to delete the thread when it went global, and who can blame them? Their faces were plastered all over the place!

Alternatively, Schmidt Marketing in HK got wind of the story and requested the thread be taken down.

All speculation of course.

We have now come full circle. The first Leica was supposed to be used to take exposure tests for a movie camera, ie 35 mm film.

Now we have a Leica that takes movies. Who wooda thought.

Tobey,

Apparently if you read the official history of Leica, that is a myth.

There is actually a thread about the thread on Steve Huff's web site, the camera was shown to a bunch of people (dealers probably) at a banquet hold by Schmidt marketing. These folks seems to be more comfortable with English than with Chinese ... no translation needed for British colonies.

Stevehuff.com links to HKLC - 吹水區 Chit Chat Area - Hong Kong Leica Fan Club - Powered by Discuz!

Just in case they delete the thread again, here are some comments - sounds like these people are not very impressed:

have to have a go at these guys. my comments waiting for the huff moderation

some pretty harsh comments here, which only underscores the problem with comment page- everyone has an ass!

Anyway, I was there that night but at a different table and i dont know these guys. By the time the cameras came to our table the battery was dead. (thanks guys!) The event was held at a hotel by Schmidt Marketing and Leica, there were a couple of S, M, X2, d-lux 6, v lux 5 going around, and yes there were all you can drink champaign, wine, booz, if I were taking snaps with the ixus the images will come out blur.

I actually took some shots with the S, but learning from the experience I don't think I would want to share them openly. Besides, they are soft, oof, shakey, poorly composed, why would you want to see them?

Bottom line, most of us here are just amateurs, if you think you can take better pictures, good for you! Now you can go work on your online etiquette and basic manner. To the guy with the ixus, send it.

Maybe i am too sensitive but I can also feel some sourness or jealously ... some vague but wrong accuse on chinese having the $ to buy but can't take good pictures. of coz we are hk but westerners never know the difference and eventually hk are indeed chinese too ...

Now if M is not going to sell as expected worldwide, I guess the thread/pics would be the scapegoat or even Schidmt Marketing HK would take some blame of allowing external SD cards to be inserted and photos being posted in a product launching ceremony ... quite sad though.

Ultimately as I said, CMOS is CMOS and it could not be too different from other CMOS. The selling points are still high ISO, quality
