Leica 1600mm f/5.6 Apo-Telyt-R

I just read an article that included the 1600mm f/5.6 Apo-Telyt-R. Close to the center of the lens, on the right side, is a lever. I am wondering if anyone knows what its function is.

Do you have link to the article or picture, it may help with identification.

R 1600mm lens was one-off private commission so no one but owner & Leica are in the know.

That "lever" seems to be on both sides of the lens barrel. At 60 kg, I would suggest that they are additional handles to allow a 2-men, or 3-men, team to move the lens around.

... given that such a customer (Sultan or around, iirc) surely has always a crew of servants when is time for hobby :o... people of this kind go sometimes next to my town to take at the factory their precious COUPLE of hand-made-personalized hunting rifles... their hunting crew is typically made by one that keeps and cleans ONE rifle while the other is in use, and another who charges it and hands it to the shooter when he hands the discharged rifle to the first one... of course there is also the "boy" with beverages... of 2nd/level degree for he doesn't TOUCH the guns... and another (or more, depending on preys) to manage the "dirty job" of catching the victims...

Well if I owned it there would be beers in it (as was presumably intended by its German designer) but as you point out the Sheik is likely to fill it with non-alcoholic consumables that suit his palate. I wasn't insinuating that the Sheik might have a sly tipple on the side. Goodness gracious no.:p

Pete.

One never knows. Maybe the Sheik's appreciation for high quality German goods has extended to the occasional beer.

The 1600mm lens has a similar exterior and 'sight' to the above 800mm f6.3 Telyt.

The 800mm Telyt-S is 108cm in length with the hood attached and is a 3 element achromatic 'telescope' construction.

The 1600mm lens is 155cm in length with hood attached - so is likely to be a retrofocus design.

Best wishes

Dunk,

Did you mean Telephoto? 1600mm is a bit long to need a Retrofocus design! :D
