Preparing for the M

Wilson - I'm thinking of going in this direction as an interim. If I do, I'd be really interested in hearing your opinion of the Canon Tripod ring on the 80-200. This may be the best solution for me in the end, as lens rotation isn't possible with the Leica R to M mount. Was the only modification needed to get the Canon ring working to remove or grind down the red plastic button on the lens?

Chris,

As well as popping off the red button (mine was a glass/ceramic material and not very susceptible to grinding down), you need to chamfer both edges of the Canon Tripod Ring. It took 2 seconds to pop it off and 10 minutes to find it afterwards. I passed my original ring on to another forum member and ground down my second one, not quite enough the first time. That made the aperture ring a bit stiff but it is better to grind in stages, so you don't grind off too much. I used a Dremel and a sanding cylinder on a rubber arbor to do the chamfering. I did it at approx 35º. The required ring is a Canon A (W). Below is a pic showing the extent of the chamfering.

Given that Leica traditionally put lens rotation facilities on their lens mount adapters, it is a surprising omission, especially given the high price.

Wilson - am I right in thinking that you've put some form of protective tape on the inside of the lens ring?

The more I reflect on this, the more useful the ring lens mount is beginning to look..... I've just ordered the Lolli adapter!

No its just as it came. It is high density foam.

Chris,

Although my lens has lovely optics, it has obviously been well loved. It is not in "concours d'elegance" condition, with some scuffing, dulling and micro scratching of the paint. I have not noticed any additional from the ring mount, but that is not to say with use and rotation of the lens, there will be some further paint wear. If you wanted to minimise this, you could smooth the chamfering off with some 360 grade wet and dry paper afterwards. I loosen the ring quite a bit prior to rotation. By using this ring, I feel that wear on the R to M mount will be minimised, as using the adapter mount, there is quite a bit of leverage with that weight and length of lens. With the M, it is very nicely balanced on a monopod.

Someone might be interested in this little device:

Apparently Luigi still has some in stock! He's selling for €360. Unfortunately this is a bit expensive compared to the new R to M (when it gets here!) and doesn't have the built in tripod mount. However - if the mount doesn't interest you, it might be a good way round the problem of mounting R lenses on the M, and it looks like a beautifully made object.

If this adapter is exactly the same as the 22228 - be careful. It cannot be used on 3 cam R lenses.

I have a 22228 and was thinking that if and when I decide to buy a new M it could used to mount R lenses ... I have mounted my 21mm f4 Super Angulon R 3 cam lens on my M6 using this adaptor and do not recall any problems.

Can you please advise further as regards any risk if used with the M 240?

There are several of these listed on Ebay.

Best wishes

Dunk,

3 Cam lenses can be fitted to the 22228 adapter if they have been modified. Your Super Angulon may be been altered see here for source of information. This is from Andrew Nemeth, who is usually very accurate. Leica FAQ — R + M lens mount adapters

As I read it ... Andrew Nemeth states that 3 cam lenses can be mounted on the 22228 - but lenses with only the third R cam cannot be mounted. All my lenses are 3 cam - but I would not mount my 3 cam ROM lens (only have one ie 28-90mm) on the adaptor. And appears to be the adaptor which needs modifying to permit mounting the R cam lens.

I just tried my 3 cam 50/2 R and 28/2.8 R lenses and they both mount onto the 22228 adaptor - they are regular 3 cam lenses and have not been modified - and neither has the adaptor been modified.

The only potential problem with my adaptor is the red lens release button which if anything like the plastic button used on early SL cameras, is liable to fail - so I will treat it with respect.

Best wishes

Dunk,

I have never really got up to speed on the number of cams on R lenses, having been a long terms Contax SLR user, other than a very brief, expensive and disastrous foray into a Leicaflex SL. I don't know the difference between 3 cam lenses, third cam lenses and ROM lenses. All my Leica books are too old to cover this.

Scott,

I share your frustration on poor quality, wrongly specced adapters. I have pretty much stopped buying no name adapters. The Metabones M to m4/3rds is very nice indeed and a reasonable price ($99). I now only buy from UK sources, where I can return them if they are rubbish. Below is a pic of the new Leica 14642 adapter, made out of diamonds and unobtanium, showing tripod foot.

Seems like it would be nice to give the person who traveled to Photokina and took this shot some credit where credit is due. No?

I just found the image on Google, minus the copyright. You can see it is much poorer quality than the original. I found it last year, when I was searching for the R code and from memory, it was on a dealer's website, who must have nicked it from Mr. Foubare. I just assumed it was a Leica stock image.

Using the above picture of the new Leica R to M adapter and my Leica R to M adapter 22228, I purchased five years ago, I was able to pen in the code with a magic marker on the back of the adapter and have the M (type 240) bring up the R to M adapter message and then the manual input of lens came up and I saw the R menu in the screen. With this I was able to put in the lens I was using, the 11277 Vario-Elmar-R 1:4 35 to 70 lens with macro. I tried my other R lenses and all my three cam lenses work fine with this older R to M adapter. I am going to leave it on as I am sure that the code I put on with the marker pen will come off when I remove the adapter. Then, when I want to use another R lens in the future, I will just reapply the code again. I must say that I was suprised when the R to M Adapter message came up on the screen.

PS: I do have the template, purchased through eBay, that has the holes to precicely locate the six bit code on to the mounting flange of adapter.

PSS: Beware that the R to M adapter listed on ebay has a red plastic mount release that is notorious for breaking. The adapter with the metal release is worth its weight in gold. I would avoid the adapter with the plastic release.

Danny,

Can you confirm whether the 22228 brings up the 28/90 framelines or not. If Leica have implemented the requested feature that the 110111 code would work with all framelines, that would make life much simpler for using other adapters (Canon FD to M, Nikon F to M, Contax CX/Y to M, etc). I doubt that we will be that lucky, however.

Yes, it does bring up the 28/90 frames in the viewfinder of the M (typ 240). I just checked for them and there they were.

I can confirm this too - I'm currently using a 22228 adapter borrowed from Malcolm Taylor. He's coded this mount and the lens menu choice comes up as it should. It's a nice piece of engineering. I hope the long-awaited R to M adapter comes up to the same standard when it eventually arrives!
