Preparing for the M

... the new M will apparently support only 24 fps or 25 fps for technical and political reasons (taxes?) that I do not understand.

I've been told it's for technical reasons only. The image processor simply is not powerful enough to support 30 fps (or more) in progressive mode at full video resolution.

Isn't it funny how people first object against video at all—and when it's there, complain about not having enough video modes? :D

Chris,

I had always assumed to go from a 35/135 to a 50/75 and then on to a 28/90, you would need to add material to the camming surface on the male mount, whereas the other direction, it is just a question of filing/grinding away.

Have I got this the wrong way round or is Malcolm going to have to weld a little bit onto your mounts, assuming you want to get them to 28/90?

Wilson

Wilson / O1af - I can't remember what framelines the two adapters I've given Malcolm brought up. I've sent a Fotodiox Canon FD > M + an ebay Chinese (very nicely machined) Nikon > M. I do remember when he modified another mount for me (135 A-T) he had to braze something on to bring up the 90 framelines for the M8. I then had to have that mount adapted for use on the M9...

I'm confident he can sort out the ones he now has.

So, in a nutshell, no 48 fps hi-definition 3D to take movies like 'The Hobbit'.

Just a guess but anything over 25/30 fps may be regarded as a professional video camera and attract heavy import duties and restrictions when entering certain countries.

No. A "professional video camera" is one that can take continuous clips of longer than 30 min duration.

When trying to decide if I am going to order an EVF for the M 240, I wonder if any of you have used a Hoodman Loupe. It gets rave reviews by National Geographic photographer Joe McNally for viewing the LCD in bright sunlight on, for instance, a Canon 5D Mk lll. Since the M 240 will have a simillar LCD screen, I assume the Hoodman Loupe will work well there too, but I have no idea how this compares to an EVF.

Though I mainly shoot available light, I do also shoot a flash fill in sunlight, so there is the consideration of loosing a flash shoe with the EVF too.

In Burma, a professional video camera is what the man with the Kalashnikov says it is :)

I would not be without my Hoodman Loupe when shooting outdoors. It is indispensable on my M9 and P 45+ for accurate viewing. Even the diopter ring is useful for me- a blind bat from the 40's. Just imagine all the funds spent to get to that " location" where an $80 device can make the day sometimes.

As to how it might compare to an EVF, I believe it depends on the size of the EVF and if you can zoom enough with the EVF to match the size of the rear LCD screen of the camera. I will use both when that day comes that an M can use an EVF- like next year sometime.

Thanks for the reply. Anyone else with experience with both?

Burma was 30 years ago when I used to frequent the place.

Afraid I still think of it as Burma rather than Myanmar. I used to insure the national airline in the 1970's. All the proposal documentation used to arrive on mid brown paper, typed with a purple ink ribbon. We used to spend hours trying to work out what it all said. We kept asking them to send it all in Burmese, which we could get translated in the UK, as we had a Burmese nationality lady working for us but I think they wanted to show how international they were.

Does anyone know if the New M's 'R to M adaptor' comes complete with the tripod foot which Stefan Daniels demonstrated being unscrewed in his Photokina video? I have not seen the 'foot' illustrated in any of the accessory photos thus wondering if it might be an optional extra?

Best wishes

Dunk,

All the dealers' photos show the adapter without the foot, so my guess is that it is going to be extra. Par for the course :(
