The M vs the D800E

I love my M8 but I am looking for an update. I know some of you guys have Leica and also a D800, I have seen the files of the 800 and have been blown away by the size and quality of the files. The question is, as I am most interested in landscape do you think that the quality of the new M will compare, should I wait, or save a few £ 's and get the 800.

Interested to know what your take is.

All of us "think" something about... ;) my thought is "let's wait M files and see"... not so original , I suppose, and shared by many : follow this advice ; landscapes don't get away... :p and M will be surely a solution to evaluate; if you have SOME lenses for your M8, the switch to D800 could even be not so convenient...

I have the D800E and the M9. When I put comparison photos up here, it was difficult to tell them apart. Expecting the M to be similar to or even a bit better than the M9, the main difference is in the lenses you want to use and how much you want to carry. I like the M9 for landscape and for its small system size but the D800E is great for long lenses and action shots. If you have a collection of Leica lenses then waiting for the M might be your best option. If you need to upgrade your lens kit then the D800E may be more economical. Does this help? Probably not... That is why I have both systems.

... I (and surely you too) do know how was Zugspitze glacier 25 years ago... and how it is now... :(

I have two pics of the Rhone Glacier from the Furka Pass, taken nearly 40 years apart from almost the same spot, there's a lot less ice for you Martinis now :(

I ran a test with a friends 800E this past week . Someplace north of 16x24 inch prints, the 800e will do better providing you have the lenses of current generation to match.

I did some prints at 11x14 from my M9 , 240 ppi, sized to 11x14 and sent to my prolab . They came back so sharp it was unbelievable looking like crisp new engraved money. The smallest details were rendered perfectly. The only sharpening I did was in ACR 25 amount, .7 radius. This is the default setting amount with a smaller radius. Nothing after. They were economy prints which means they do no sharpening or color correction. AiPro Lab uses laser printers.

Calculate how far 240 ppi will take you. Double the pixels, and you should be able to make a prints 30% larger linerar dimensions, not area.

From aha you have said wouldn't you be better off comparing an S2 to the D800E? I think that the S2 will take better landscapes than either of the other two and they can be bought on ebay at a great reduction over the new price. I think most amateurs do not look at the S2 because of its size but in your case I would have thought you could justify the additional weight to get the quality you really want.

The quality of the M9 compares very well, in fact the M9 is absolutely superb for landscape work.

I assume the M will be similar except perhaps for 1 or 2 stops of ISO noise performance

the main thing you need to think about is size, weight and nikon lenses

MF on the D800 (any DSLR) is a painfull process

I bought a D800E for a bit. It took beautiful pictures. Its sensor is truly state of the art, but I returned to Leica quite easily.

It was too big, too heavy, too noticeable and the Nikon lenses just don't cut it wide open. this might, of course, not be an issue for landscape if you are using the lens closed down all the time. Also if you are driving with the equipment in your car it will also not make any difference. But as the M9 is almost as good and the lenses are much better, that would swing it for me.

If I was rich enough, and I wanted a camera just for landscapes, I would say the Pentax 645D is a real bargain at the moment and the original Leica S2 can also be found for discounts

If you are into B&W the Monochrom renders like medium format IMHO, buts its a minority pursuit ;)
