Can't believe they'll ever ditch M4/3 but at least, they are talking now ... close to the bottom when being asked whether they have any plan to do a FF mirrorless, Inoue san says it's possible with their technology but there will be many discussions. :)

Interview with Yoshiyuki Inoue, Senior Engineering Planner for the Panasonic GH3 | EOSHD.com

Perhaps Leica could license the M mount to Panasonic beside their red dot and let Panasonic do the dirty work.

i don't think Panasonic would need any m mount license other than for the 6 bit coding. Anyone can make an M mount camera today- the M mount is in the public domain.

The basic mechanical part, yes.

But if Leica has any corporate intelligence at all (which I do believe they have) they have already patented a M bayonet with some extra electrical contacts. Otherwise, somebody else would do it and prevent Leica from using such an 'extended M' bayonet. And that would be a disaster.

Even if Panasonic really went that route (which I doubt) they wouldn’t use the M mount. As far as EVIL technology in a rangefinder camera is concerned, we’ve got Leica’s new M. A newly developed FF EVIL system would use a new mount will all the state-of-the-art features that the M mount is missing. It would probably have a larger diameter and a shorter flange distance.

not really- only if Leica wanted to use the exact same system patented by a third party. And to get that patent the third party would have to actually invent something (or at least that is how it is supposed to work). You can't just lay down a sort of speculative ambit claim patent that covers any 'electrification' of the M bayonet...

In addition having a patent does not ensure you have any rights. Should you seek to sue another party for an infringement of your patent- that party can (and likely will) challenge the validity of your patent. Such a challenge will often be far more rigorous than the various tests and procedures that occur when you take out a patent. Such challenges can result in the cancellation of you patent.

Basically the various government agencies that grant patents do not thoroughly test the claims you make at application. Mere approval is no guarantee of the patents ultimate validity.

Patents are interesting though in that an owner must allow their patent to be published in the public domain... If Leica is working on any new bayonet designs it could be possible to get clues about them by searching the various patent databases. If they have the patents already then they are already published. I haven't searched the various databases myself so don't know... but I imagine someone else would have revealed any interesting M patents were they in existence....

Nice summary of the patent system - atleast as I know it in the US.

Amazingly , I have seen our competitors patent some of our parts that were designed before I was born. I think I could patent anything. But as you stated - not likely I could enforce it
