There is more there: This comes from Dr. Andreas Kaufmann, the owner of Leica. What is more, the advent of the R10 is promised for the Photokina 2008.And a move to Wetzlar is needed to be able to expand production.

The Photokina dates are Tuesday, September 23 to Sunday, September 28, 2008. That gives me a year and a half to save for the R10 LOL.

A famous italian magazine, FOTOGRAFIA REFLEX , published the news that a project by Leica-Camera to move back its entire facilities to Wetzlar is mature...

Does anyone know anything about this?

Best,

Ed

Are there more info than that ? :

Couldn't find any news on DPReview or so, to confirm this.

Seeing as I already did a translation to German over in the German forum I might as well repeat the exercise over here:

It's no longer a rumor. Leica really prepares for the move of its assembly lines back to Wetzlar where Ernst Leitz founded the company in 1869. This comes from Dr. Andreas Kaufmann, head officer of the ACM group which owns a 93% share in Leica. Dr. K. went on to explain that ACM already owns two production sites for optics and fine mechanics in Wetzlar and that it makes a lot of sense to make more room for Leica production there. However, the final decision has yet to be taken. He further confirmed that Leica is busy developing a digital slr "made in Germany" (R10?) and hinted at its launch at Photokina 2008. Kaufmann, himself an avid photographer, appears to be that white knight that the company has been awaiting for quite some time now. Next on the agenda is the withdrawal from the stock exchange, to be executed as soon as more than 95% of the shares are in ACM's possession.

Strangely, the full text cannot be reached from the headline news article. I had to dig around some to reveal it.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

Thanks Dieter nice to be fluent in German, Italian and English!

As an AG, or public comany, we've been able to glean information on Leica's business numbers from the normal announcements, annual reports and so on.

I expect that if Leica withdraws from the stock exchange (which I guess means they will revert to Leica Camera GmbH), we'll likely get much less idea of how well they're doing.

That's true Mark, but on the other hand they don't have to have to try and keep shareholders with short term interests happy.

So as I read the article ACM is going to close down the factory at Solms and move production to one of its existing factories.

You may be right Carsten, but if Leica owned the freehold on the property in Solms then it would make sense for the new owners to close the site and sell it, or if they lesae it to move out. Of course this would require moving the ofice staff as well as assembly. I guess we'll have to wait and see.
