pico Posted September 25, 2012 Share #45 Â Posted September 25, 2012 I don't get it. I have never in almost fifty years used the preview lever. If it fell off I'd never mind.

andybarton Posted September 25, 2012 Share #47  Posted September 25, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) That isn’t current anymore.  It most certainly is.  Only the M9 was dropped last week, not the M9P
pico Posted September 25, 2012 Share #48 Â Posted September 25, 2012 I wonder why Leica did not go to a zinc alloy top for the M-E rather than brass. Would it not have been less expensive? Heck, they could go to a composite body and top.

I seem to remember reading an interview somewhere with a Leica man who implied that the M9P was going. I'll try to find it again.
andybarton Posted September 26, 2012 Share #52 Â Posted September 26, 2012 That is certainly my understanding. I have asked Leica UK to confirm and will be happy to stand corrected if I am wrong.
ayewing Posted September 27, 2012 Share #53 Â Posted September 27, 2012 Is the upgrade from M9 to M9P still available? I am interested as my 2 year warranty runs out in 6 months when it might make sense to upgrade.

I am interested as my 2 year warranty runs out in 6 months when it might make sense to upgrade. Â Don't forget that you can extend the warranty for another year (which is the same extension as you will get with the M9P upgrade.) It's a lot less of an expense than the upgrade, and unless you feel you really want the different top plate and sapphire glass screen cover it might be the sensible way to go. Personally, that's what I'd do. The upgrade is pretty expensive for only cosmetic changes, imho. Granted they will inspect the camera at the time of the upgrade and make sure it's up to operating spec. Â But black electrician's tape and a Giotto screen protector works pretty well as a poor person's M9P upgrade
UliWer Posted September 27, 2012 Share #56 Â Posted September 27, 2012 That is certainly my understanding. I have asked Leica UK to confirm and will be happy to stand corrected if I am wrong. Â This was a question at the Leica meeting with the Forum last Saturday. They explicitly said that the M9 and the M9-P are not produced any longer. I hope I didn't misunderstand anything. Andreas' transcript of what was actually said will make this clear.
kamuishirou1999 Posted September 27, 2012 Share #57 Â Posted September 27, 2012 An article in the British Journal of Photography also indicate that the M-E replaces both the M9 and the M9-P. Â Photokina 2012: 'Leica will never release an affordable M camera' - British Journal of Photography Schopf's comments come as Leica reveals that the M-E will replace the M9 and M9P cameras in the next two weeks. scott_233 Posted September 28, 2012 Share #58  Posted September 28, 2012 I don't buy the whole 'essentials' part. Before yesterday it was state of the art for Leica, now its 'essentials'. Like a cheap range of food in a supermarket.  If they want to make a real essentials camera, here is what I think it should be: Identical to an M3 in size and shape. A wind lever to recock the shutter No LCD screen you can set ISO using a dial on the rear like the film cameras Images are recorded in RAW with all adjustments in post-processing Maybe a small e-paper display to show absolute essentials like battery condition and shots remaining (like the M8) [*]Extreme battery life - in many months not days In today's world of full frame compacts and SLR-Video cross overs many people buy Leica because of their approach, simplicity and focus on the basics of photography.  That's what I want in a Leica, for everything else I have my 5D mk2.  That's the best Leica wish list I have seen ever! I'd happily pay the Leica premium for such a device. I use an M8 and never review the photo just taken, the LCD is always off except to increase ISO which I always then forget to change back to 160 until several shots back in daylight. It is set on "discreet" so the recock noise can be delayed. I also use a "Thumbs Up" attachment so a real lever would be welcomed, not to mention being able to use the Garry Winogrand technique of pretending to fiddle with camera controls when taking candids.  Would be great if Leica preserved a spot like this in its M family. brill64 Posted September 28, 2012 Share #59 Â Posted September 28, 2012 the M8 was discontinued with the introduction of the M8.2 & that discontinued shortly after the introduction of the M9..it's plausible but doubtful.
