Hi Andy,

Is the M body thicker overall than the M9? or is the 5mm extra due to the thumbwheel protrusion?

Seen anything else interesting at Photokina?

I'm not an M9 owner but I believe it is slightly thicker. I will get the brochure out in a minute.

It feels good in the hand.

I found the new Adox film and bought 10 rolls for €20 including developer. :) Spent all the rest of the time being entertained by the great and the good of Solms.

I don't think much of the M-E. The colour is terrible. I don't like the Paul Smith X2, but at least they will only make 1500 of them. The a-l-c X2s could be nice if you have any taste :)

I have really enjoyed my trip here. There is far more than any sane person could take in, in one day.

Do you know a Digilux 2 EVF? It's nothing like that :)

It's the same one as used on the X2 and I was very impressed with it. Very little lag.

I expect that, as the EVF technology improves, you will be able to swap the EVF2 for a later model. I expect the digital feed is the full frame image, so better EVFs will be able to take advantage.

Now, how long will it be before Leica starts producing R lenses again, maybe as a sort of "budget" lenses range? There's a thought, no? ;)

I'm very impressed with this announcement. Re the M, it seems to me they've really tried to listen to many of the comments about what the new model should have. It will be very interesting indeed to see the image quality.

I guess all R lenses have just doubled in value :p

One thing - it is interesting that Leica is not using the 50 APO in the marketing images but are sticking to the "old" Summilux.

Leica have no plans to start making R lenses again. Certainly not old design R lenses. They have moved on.

Andy, you mentioned that this is the first digital M that you could be interested in. Do you imagine this might get you out of your DSLR for your R lenses? Does the EVF with focus peking (duck) :) seem to be a better option for focusing than matte screen of a DSLR?

Is the 10x live view implemented so it would be easy to switch to it on the fly with an R lens?

Sounds like you are having a great little get away!

Anyone notice the specs suggest it's 42mm thick vs 39mm for the M9.

Plus the M is 95g heavier.

Indeed, I would think the extra 5mm is the thumb rest, that's why I asked Andy, I thought he might have seen the M and ME together. I think it's highly unlikely that Leica are machining a whole new M body.

It's the same one used on the Olympus EP3, and I was thoroughly unimpressed with that. Adequate for viewing on an AF camera, but unpleasant for me to use with manual focus...same requirement for visual acuity and racking to and fro around the point of sharp focus as a traditional SLR, only without the crispness of a mirror+GG system. Defeats the main advantage of a rangefinder (positive, precise, quick focus) and of the Leica M finder (ability to see outside the frame).

I expect you are most likely incorrect if history is any teacher. Add-on EVFs from other manufacturers are not backwardly compatible, eg LVF2 from Panny won't work on GF1/LX5.

Yes, and wondering whether things like RRS baseplate/grip will fit on M. I am hoping "yes" but expecting "no". Obviously there will also be new batteries and chargers. That at least is a trade off with some benefits.

Were I to buy the M I would use the rangefinder at nearly all times. That's why I'd pay so much for it. I would use the EVF and - rarely - the screen for situation where I can't cope using the rangefinder, including but not limited to architecture (close tolerances for framing), close-up and macro, anything where the parallax is critical and - perhaps - difficult lighting.

For me, the M would give a way to cope with the main disadvantages of a rangefinder, all in one box, more or less.

Interesting I measured my M9 and the body excluding screen looks close to 37mm, so I think your right, but in the video it does look a little thicker ?

Thanks Andy. You made me laugh with the life of Brian comment. One off favorite films. I presume the M will be in NYC at the photo expo at the end of October will take a peak then. Meantime I guess there will be lots of comments on the iq

They will not fit the new M. It uses a different "lug" like the older film cameras to attach the end of the plate to the camera. You can see it in the pictures.

Yes. I would sell my D700 to go towards an M. The EVF is terrific, no matter what some purists here will tell you. Is not an SL viewfinder, nor even an R8, but it's bloody good and the focus peaking works very well indeed.

10x view I didn't use. Sorry. Focus peaking meant I didn't have to.

And, yes, I have had a great time here. Very nice supper indeed with a forum pal.
