Hi all, I just purchased my m8 a few months ago and I just started finding these posts on here about screens failing. I haven't had this problem but I was wondering if this is happening to owners of M8U's (or sapphire upgraded cameras) or only to those who have the standard screen?

Unfortunately Leica don't know which cameras are fitted with LCD's from the bad batches, so it can happen to any M8. The other issue is if you accidentally break the LCD. In both cases Leica cannot repair or replace them, and they offer an 'upgrade' to an M9.

Assuming you don't break the LCD and it's not one of the potentially faulty ones, you should be fine. There is much disappointment at Leica's inability to find a solution to this issue, but there have only been a few actual failures reported so far.

Welcome to the forum.

I also recently purchased my M8.1 (M8U) and have found that there are some occasions at which people have had their screens replaced, however as of now (as earleygallery) mentioned the screens are not stocked at Leica. As far as we know, the camera is otherwise full serviceable.

apparently there were a batch of faulty screens that Leica knew about....following which they had changed the screens they were using. I haven't read too many people who have actually had a screen failure-----BUT people have loved to talk about it a lot :)

my philosophy....enjoy your camera...don't worry about it too much....if something happens, then you should deal with the problem as it arises. I am sure Leica will be helpful in this process, contrary to what the ultra-negative comments you will also find on forums.

most importantly: congratulations and welcome!

I think that there is a misundestanding here:confused::confused:

The M8 has a LCD display with either a screen from plastic or from sapphire glass (either the M8.2 or an ungraded M8=M8u)

So if the plastic has been replaced by the sapphire version, the LCD itself remains the old one.

The problem with the coffee rings was with the LCD.

Leica has stopped service on the LCD's, as the LCD's are not anymore on the market available! Not on the plastic covers!

This is my understanding, but if I'm wrong, please correct me:rolleyes:

Hi John, I'm definitely not one to correct you! I understand what you are saying though. So they just replaced the cover on the LCD when doing the upgrade. Not the entire LCD unit. Thanks for clearing that up for me!

EDIT: I just got an email back from Leica.....the LCD screen is indeed the same, the Sapphire cover/Plastic cover is part of the rear section of the body...which is replaced in the upgrade.

Here is a pic of the part that Leica replaces when they change the cover of the display(so not the display ITSELF)

This is the plastic version, that was returned by Leica after replacing it with a Safire glass.

I cannot answer your question as the upgrade was done by the previous Wonder :-))

John, I asked customer service to return the old parts. They sticked them in a nice black bag. In this case the return included a perfectly well working shutter, a part which may become sought after in the future. One of the reasons for upgrading to sapphire was that the coating of the plastic screen was severely damaged by the glue of a Chinese screen protector.:( Had nothing to do with with failing LCD screens.

  • 5 weeks later...

I had my M8 upgraded with the hardened screen and four years later the coffee stain developed on the LCD.

Leica informed me they could not repair the screen and asked me to send them my M8 for evaluation in Solms and then I would be offered an M9 at a reduced price. I already had an M9 so I did not follow through and sold the camera, still functioning perfectly, to a friend who may avail himself of Leica's offer.
