mboerma Posted September 17, 2012 Share #43 Â Posted September 17, 2012 I like the Leica M tutorials clip with John Dooley, available on the product page (Leica Camera AG - Photography - LEICA M) Gives a nice overview. I'm really impressed.
CalArts 99 Posted September 17, 2012 Share #44 Â Posted September 17, 2012 So my M9-P is now called an ME by the looks of things.... Â Seems to be identical except for a "quieter" shutter. And an unusual new anthracite gray paint.....not sure I like that color over the traditional versions. A bit odd that they would call it the traditional M yet use a new color. But that and the shutter seems to be the only differences. Maybe the M9 and M9-P will be phased out soon? Well have to see about the pricing structure. Â I had assumed they would make a 'modern' digital version with all the bells and whistles and either continue with the M9/M9-P (or a new 'traditional' version.) I'm happy they did that. It shows they are trying to cover all demands by different users. It also makes me happy to stay with my M9 now.

IWC Doppel Posted September 17, 2012 Share #46 Â Posted September 17, 2012 How uneventful ! Â Interesting the new CMOS based M has 'only' 6400 ISO, if this is comparable to the M9 and MM it has not really move the game by more than 1.5 stops over the 9 and possibly behind the MM. Â I am very glad the ME continues and M9 based sensors are not about to hit the 'old parts' bin

marknorton Posted September 17, 2012 Share #48 Â Posted September 17, 2012 Seems the M-E is an M9 in all but name - some changes, no frame preview lever but it's no wonder they've been discounting the M9 and M9-P recently.
mboerma Posted September 17, 2012 Share #49 Â Posted September 17, 2012 The new Leica M-series brochure no longer shows the M9 or M9P, only the Monochrom, M-E and new M. So I assume the M9 will be discontinued very soon.

CalArts 99 Posted September 17, 2012 Share #51 Â Posted September 17, 2012 The ME has a new shutter: "Closed type focal plane shutter for classic image exposure, with external cocking mechanics." Â The sensor is a KAF -18500 CCD 18 MP. Â The color is anthracite with silver dials (I don't like the look, but that's just my opinion.) Â Otherwise it's the same M9/M9-P and with the very same LCD display. Â The M is entirely new and will satisfy those who want the latest in digital imaging technology. It should also keep the naysayers quiet about "archaic Leica." Â I think Leica did good this time around and listened to both traditionalists and newer users (some of them have never used a film Leica before and are new to rangefinders.) Â Depending on pricing structures, it all sounds good to me.....
Rick Posted September 17, 2012 Share #52 Â Posted September 17, 2012 The used M9 will be a classic for a few more years. The ME will insure good resale of minty M9 and M9p. Â Weather seals on the M and video and peaking and R adapter and live view! All in the classic RF camera. Couldn't be happier! Â And, S-camera-class processing, which means simple color menus and faster CPU! Nice rear LCD!!! I can now get a better idea of what I'm taking without having to load it to my computer. Â Very nice so far.
Rick Posted September 17, 2012 Share #53 Â Posted September 17, 2012 In Live View and advanced viewfinder mode: Through the Lens (TTL) metering, center weighted, spot or multifield measuring. Not expected by me but, could be nice if you are in live view? Wonder how well they will have implemented that?

timberline12k Posted September 17, 2012 Share #56 Â Posted September 17, 2012 US price for the M comes in around $8,140 converting the euro price on one feed.
k-hawinkler Posted September 17, 2012 Share #57  Posted September 17, 2012 US price for the M comes in around $8,140 converting the euro price on one feed.   You need to subtract about 20% VAT!  The Leica M | Photo This & That  Quote:  "The Leica M in black paint or silver chrome finish is scheduled to be available in the UK at a suggested retail price of £5,100 inc VAT from early 2013"
CalArts 99 Posted September 17, 2012 Share #58  Posted September 17, 2012 I also assume that Leica has found the answer to the cracked cover glass issue since they are using the KAF-18500 CCD in the ME. When/if an M9 gets cracked, the replacement fix should be (hopefully) permanent.  The M is a bit fatter, taller, and heavier than the current M9-P but that's to be expected.  "Leica Look" videos with Full HD video capture is a new one... I've never seen a Leica video so who knows what "Leica Look" videos really should look like  Nice to have a little more pixel dimension. And I'm sure we'll be seeing CCD versus CMOS "Leica Look" image comparisons very soon.  I hope people are happy and with no more complaining now (except for pricing )

wlaidlaw Posted September 17, 2012 Share #60  Posted September 17, 2012 The internet is quoting a UK price for the M of £5100. I am surprised it is as low as this. I suppose the EVF will be a fair bit extra. It will do wonders for R lens prices. I now slightly regret selling both of my Visoflex to R adapters.  Wilson
