Yesterday I went out and bought a new Nikon D800e for myself after getting poisoned by some of the Photo Malaysia guys. Anyway after charging the the battery and screwing on a lens I took a few shots in the house and proceeded to the bedroom and asked my wife if she wanted a new camera? Without any comment from her I put the D800e in her bag and she is now a proud owner of a new Nikon..............for me I just want to shoot Leica

crazy or stupid????

I've just been fiddling around trying to make some camera and lens choices, and as part of the process I was comparing my M9 with 135 TE to my Canon 5D2 and 180 APO-Telyt.

Experimental outcome - the 5D2 and 180 clearly delivered "better" results most of the time: better lens (slightly), better focusing reliability, less image noise (the M9/135 required stopping down to f/8 for decent focus reliability, which meant ISO 400 or 800 in anything but direct sunlight).

Practical outcome - I'm not giving up the M9; I'm giving up medium-telephoto photography (unless absolutely necessary). Lugging the 5D just isn't worth it. I'll get better pictures with a camera I'm comfortable with (Leica M, limited to 15mm-90mm).

(One week of hauling around the 5D for the tests reinflamed lower-back pains that had disappeared when I first switched to Ms 10 years ago. Lesson (re)learned.)

As David Alan Harvey said, in explaining his shift from Nikon/180 photographer to Leica/35 photographer: "I still see "180mm" pictures - I just don't take them any more."

The 5D will sit on my shelf unless I absolutely, positively need 180-400 reach, or the video capability (with a 21 Super-Angulon-R). And who knows - a live-view, video-capable M10 announcement next week could put it on the for-sale shelf, instead.

Quite a few members here have picked up wrongly what this thread is all about, its not about me being rich or carless with money (well not too carless) its about "wanting to shoot Leica" rather than carrying around a big DSLR

Andy I feel for you Bro, I only own a 35mm f2 and will buy a Summilux 21mm next week but that will be it until after Christmas when I will hopefully get a 50mm Summilux and nothing else

Well. an action like this would have met with a cold reception in my house. Not being a button fetishist, Patricia would have made me return the Nikon promptly.:o

As a matter of fact she was quite taken with the Fuji X 10 ( so was I btw, lovely little camera) but refused to let me trade in her Olympus XZ1, as she prefers a white camera...

So, from my perspective, stupid I fear....

You never mentioned if your wife was into photography? If she isn't then this was just plain foolish. If she is than perhaps you scored some points that will pay dividends later. ;). Btw, I never for a second read your post as an intent to flaunt wealth. After all this is a Leica forum. You can't buy anything more than a used M8 and a starter third party lens for the $3200 cost of the D800E.

Yes she is and even though this is now her new toy, it is a family toy and we share things so not a big issue here....................but saying that I agree that it was stupid to not at least sat down with my old lady and discussed this first as she might have preferred a nice new X-Pro or something a wee bit smaller

Anyway she is happy and I am happy shooting Leica so its win win situation all the way around:):):)

Screwing a lens onto a Nikon is hard to do unless you have an L->M adapter. I have one. Then, a screwmount Leica lens would only be good for macro work because the lens register is off. You can collapse an early Summicron into the Nikon, but it still only gets ~6" focus. Tested that. The image is better than using a Leica Mount collapsible Nikkor 5cm F2 used close-up. Compared the two on the Nikon.

It would have been better to use an F-Mount lens on the D800e to give a better assessment.

So why did you go out and buy a big DSLR?

I'm confused.

I'm confused.

Because at the time it seemed like a good idea.............but this has all backfired on me as my wife says she can't stand the weight of the D800e so today I got her a Xpro1 instead:):) could have been worse she cold have asked for a MM:(:(
