The 21/24 f2 idea is interesting.

It would almost certainly have to be a Distagon or wholly new design in that case. I understand that the Biogon design was stretched to its limit to make the ZM 21/2.8. I had one of these which I sold a friend on the forum when I got a WATE. I rather regretted it, as it was an excellent lens and I used it more in retrospect than I ever did the WATE.

Any new lens would probably be a 25 not a 24mm. Zeiss has traditionally always made 25's both in Distagon and Biogon. The CX/Y 25/2.8 Distagon I used to use on my RTS2 and RX, was the only indifferent Zeiss lens I ever had. The current ZM 25/2.8 is a wonderful lens for doing building or boat interiors, as it is extremely rectilinear, even wide open and also has very modest light fall off. It works very well with the SF58D flash fitted with a Sto-Fen bounce diffuser.

did someone say 135 is no good on an M9?

In Australia one of our infamous millionaires once said 'anyone who doesn't minimize their tax obligation is a bloody mug' or words to that affect. I would rephrase it thusly: "anyone who does not try a 135 on their m9 is a bloody mug" ;-)

sure it can be a trick to focus- and yes I missed focus at f4 and 4 feet- and underexposed by 3 stops - but I am glad i put the tele-elmar on:

I agree. Here is one taken last week with the 135 T-E at Maxi Worlds at Porto Cervo in Sardinia. However, I am still not sure how much market there would be for a 135 f2. It would inevitably be big, heavy and rather unbalanced on an M9. For most purposes the 135 T-E or 135 Apo Telyt serves the need.

The original source is in Spanish, but the title of this thread translates the phrase:

.

not realy :D

Here the press release en anglais:

Carl Zeiss Press Release: photokina 2012: Preview

For fans of the Carl Zeiss family of ZM systems for rangefinder cameras, Carl Zeiss has a special surprise in store. In 2013, at least one fast lens with M bayonet will go on sale. Using lenses from the ZM series with adapters is also very popular on mirrorless system cameras.

and yes : the photo in the spanish mag shows the prototype of the new Distagon 1.4 /55m ZF.2 ;)

The only thing I can see on their site is that the ZM 15/2.8 Distagon, on which production had been suspended, is available again. However, as stocks at a number of outlets, had never run out, of this quite expensive, large, heavy and specialist lens, this is not exactly exciting news.

John,

I have just read the pre-Photokina Zeiss blurb in the original German. It does not actually say the new fast ZM lens will be announced at Photokina as the English translation seems to imply. The German says that a new fast ZM lens will go on sale in 2013. However not to show at least a teaser mock up or prototype at Photokina, like they are doing for their AF compact lenses, seems a strange decision. Photokina is the shop window of the world for photographic products.

I talked to the Mr. standing at the only Ikon at their Photokina presentation. He said it would be a few months until it is announced (Christmas/early 2013), couldn't confirm officially that there is a fast 35 involved but I am pretty sure it is.

Thank you for the update. That would be a disappointment for me, given that I already have a fast 35 (Summilux). I was hoping for an ultra fast 50.

See, and I'm happy about it as I don't like the FLE (in rendering) that much to justify its price. The CV 35/1.2 is way too large so there is really a gap. Wouldn't desire an ultrafast 50 on the other hand, I have the 50/1.4 and can always borrow the 0.95 - but I wouldn't want to have it for myself, even if it costed the same... just too large. But that's not the topic here :)

I don't like the way the FLE renders very much either and its tendency to produce purple fringing. I have an excellent chrome version from the final September 2006 batch, of the previous ASPH, with next to no aperture shift. This draws beautifully. I agree with you about the CV35/1.2, which I had before the Summilux, as in addition to its size, it is low contrast and prone to flare. With my M8, when you used a UV/IR filter, it just loved to make pink circles in the sky.

I do think it ridiculous that Zeiss are teasing you (not me, I stick to Leica). If the product is not ready at Photokina, it doesn't exist. Photokina of all places is to show what you have and plan specifically for the future if you want to, not talk about surprises for next year.

I saw a huge 55mm f1.4 which looked ridiculous, especially if you put it next to the 50mm Summilux.

"pseudo-official" facebook answer, if someone had missed it, in regarding of someone asking for the new m lens:

"Carl Zeiss Lenses Regarding your questions about the new ZM lens: In 2013, at least one fast lens with M bayonet will go on sale. But you'll have to be patient, we are not yet revealing anything more. Sorry :-) !"
