Sandstorm Posted September 3, 2012 Share #1 Posted September 3, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello, I am new to this forum and I should be a Leica user by the end of this year. I would like to buy a M9 but I have a few questions. First of all, I have never used a rangefinder camera before, I mainly shoot portrait (mostly nude and beauty shots) and nature. My main concern with the Leica M9 is the possibility to use flash studio via a Pocket Wizard transmitter. Since there is a parralax error, how does it feel when you look into the camera, I know it is different than looking into a reflex camera ( I'm used to an almost 100% visor on my reflex) but is it possible to have a fairly good image of what I am shooting. How do we compose an image. If I need precision in my composition will I be able to get it. Second concern is about using filters, like polarizers. I know I won't be able to see the effect directly but it is possible to have filters on lenses used with a Leica. Thanks for your answers. Michael Geschlecht Posted September 3, 2012 Share #2 Posted September 3, 2012 Hello Serge, Welcome to the Forum, The combination range/viewfinder gives you reasonable parallax correction but the image size does not change as you focus. As a result of that the frames for the different lenses show diffferent portions of coverage @ different distances. Your photograph has @ least what the frame shows (close-up) or more (further away). The longer the focal length you are using the more you capture OUTSIDE of the frame when you focus FURTHER away. Example: 35mm lens & 90mm lens both focussed @ their respective closest focus. Both parallax corrected. Both have framelines pretty much showing what is included in photo + a little more. 35mm lens focussed @ 100 meters: Some of image captured in photo is even further outside of frame than it was up close. Still parallax corrected. 90mm lens focussed @ 100 meters: A greater proportion of the photo is outside of the framelines than was the case w/ the 35mm lens. Still parallax corrected. In other words: You ALWAYS get a parallax corrected photo if you FOCUS BEFORE YOU FRAME. In some instances There is more in the photo than there was in the range/viewfinder image. There is NEVER less. Altho some people might disagree: I have never found getting more in a photo than what the range/viewfinder frame shows to be a problem. A Leica "M" can use all of the filters any other camera can. There are "swing out" versions of polarizing filtes available in certain sizes which allow you to see the degree of polarization & therefore adjust the filter acurately before taking the picture. The available sizes fit many, not all, of the lenses. An "M" does NOT require a more expensive circular polarizer. The direct metering system allows you to use a linear polarizer w/ equally good results. I don't know much about remote controlled flash. jaapv Posted September 3, 2012 Share #3 Posted September 3, 2012 There are plenty of users around here who use Pocket Wizards.
