Your composition worked so that my attention is first on the rooster. Just as I'm tempted to classify the image as "well-done technically, sentimentally rustic" and move on, the message pops into my awareness. I enjoyed that little frisson of discovery.

I laughed, yet felt a kind of melancholy, too, which moves this beyond mere humor and into something else. Maybe because a rooster often symbolizes a wake up call, this image feels like a call for help or attention.

The title (also amusing) is likewise ambiguous. What motivated you to take the photo? the absurdity, the emotion, the ambiguity?

An artistic, amusing, and interesting photo. Thanks for posting.

Hi Dewsweeper,

Thanks for taking a look and for the comments.

I like images that provoke deeper discussion. Obviously, some images work better at doing that than others. This is one of my personal favorites because as a found image it represents some of the unexpectedly coherent messaging that can be found within the randomness of real life. Life can certainly be more outrageous than fiction.

In this picture, this rooster (a rooster bred for the cock-fighting rings of Manila) has been tethered to a post near the sidewalk so that he doesn't wander away or engage in any fights with other roosters that likewise line the sidewalks. Unaware, the owner has given the rooster enough rope to precariously roost on top of a railing in front of a busy street. Further, it just so happens that the railing includes a phrase that could make him seem suicidal in the face of his oncoming fate in the ring.

It's one of those moments that you walk by with your camera and laugh at the recognition of the absurdity of it all.

Then you carefully take an extra couple of shots to make certain that you haven't screwed up capturing it.
