costakarl Posted September 5, 2012 Share #21 Posted September 5, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) This year I bought an R8 to take longshots on a safari and liked it so much I picked up an R9 which has more possibilities for flash. Although both came from reputable dealers they scratched the film as I discovered much later. As a courtesy Leica NY have replaced the small offending part--a plastic guide--and now both function perfectly.

SteveYork Posted September 7, 2012 Share #22 Posted September 7, 2012 I always liked the M5 but bought SL. These are my two favorites. Three of each. One for each hand, and one, I suppose, to balance on my head.
Larcomb Posted September 7, 2012 Share #23 Posted September 7, 2012 These are my two favorites. Three of each. One for each hand, and one, I suppose, to balance on my head. I don't see why the M5 was dropped. Leica could have kept the M4 along side of it.
gvaliquette Posted September 7, 2012 Share #24 Posted September 7, 2012 Iphoenix: R9 with DMR and R6.2 with Motor Winder. I won't list the lenses but they range from 21 mm to 500 mm. There are limitations to the R4 Motor Winder/Drive: They lock up after frame 36 and you have to advance frames 37, 38 and 39 manually. You should not use 24 frames film (but who does, really?). The rewind is manual. The R8/R9 Motor Drive/Winder have solved these limitations; you can load 24 or 36 exposures films and they will wind to the last frame without ripping the film out of the cassette. Rewind is motorized (and fast!) and you have the option of leaving the film tongue out or rewinding all the way in. Unfortunately, the Vario-Elmar 28-70 F3.5-4.5 is the only R lens that I have regretted buying, due to its distortion (5.5% barrel at the wide end and 4.2% at the long end, by Leica's own data sheet). That is quite visible and film does not allow for post-processing corrections! Sharpness is good and the lens is generally cheap, but now you know why! Mine sits unused since I got the 28-90 Vario-Elmar. But it will get you into Leica R photography...and you can always get other lenses. Enjoy! andybarton Posted September 8, 2012 Share #28 Posted September 8, 2012 I have Leitaxed R50/2, R90/2.8 and APO extenders 1.4x and 2x to use my other R lenses on my Nikon. How do you use your converters now that you have Leitaxed your lenses?

johnthegasman Posted September 8, 2012 Share #30 Posted September 8, 2012 Hi everyone, I use on occasions, an original Leicaflex and an SL2, also I have a Leica R6.2 which is a super camera. However my real shooter is my beloved R9, until you own one of these and use it for real, all the comments about its size and looks fade in to oblivion, the results are outstanding. I recently took some holiday shots and I was looking at the scans on my computer, when my twenty year old son walked past. He turned round and watched me go through a few of the scans. He then made the following statements Dad, what are those photos, are they 3D or something they look really "Brill" Hope there are some R9 users out there willing to give similar comments for the benefit of potential users. All the best John PS One more vote for a seperate forum for SLR leica cameras

hamey Posted September 9, 2012 Share #32 Posted September 9, 2012 Any reflex users?? I use mine most of the time, returned back from overseas took a Canon DSLR with the 21-35 & 28-90mm And the M7, to my regret I wished I took the R9 instead of the M7. Viewing through the Canon viewfinder is crappy compared to the magnificent R9 and it would off utilised my 21-35 and the 28-90mm much better. Next time this could be the combination, but probably replace the Canon with the M10 for my Digital needs. Ken Welcome, dear visitor! AB007 Posted September 9, 2012 Share #35 Posted September 9, 2012 How do you use your converters now that you have Leitaxed your lenses? I have other R lenses which are not Leitaxed. The 2x converter on zoom lens is no fun.

Guest suilvenman Posted September 10, 2012 Share #37 Posted September 10, 2012 I had an R-E for several years and really enjoyed using it, especially with an earlier version 50 Summicron. It did everything I asked of it and proved very reliable. A couple of tips about the R-E I got from Peter Grisaffi at CRR Luton: if 30th second speed is hesitant or making dragging sound then there's a problem with the shutter brake; at 1000th / 2000th speeds, if dark band appears at upper part of negative, then camera needs a service.
