Will you buy a 28mm Summicron?

I really liked my 28/2.8 Elmarit asph but traded it on a 28/2 Summicron when I saw the micro contrast: I was hooked right there. Imho it has the smoothest tonal transfer from dark to light and vice versa of any lens I've ever seen.

 

No, I wouldn't be interested in a 28/1.4 Summilux or an updated 28/2 Summicron unless they could outperform my current lens and I just don't think that's likely.

I have 3 24s, 4 28s (if you include the two MATEs) and 5 35s (again if you include the two MATEs) so I think a 28mm Summilux might be one too many. If such a lens is coming, I think it will steal sales from other lenses rather than create a whole lot of additional sales.

When photographers say "I have 3 24s, 4 28s and 5 35s, etc.", it tends to support the opposite theory: that new lenses add to overall sales rather than steal sales from existing lenses. It seems that enough people buy and keep multiple versions of popular focal lengths to make new versions worthwhile for a manufacturer. It is not hard to justify having both a larger f/1.4 lens and a more compact f/2, f/2.5, f/2.8 of the same or similar focal length.

Would you care to explain what is wrong with the current version, and which

conditions might produce a problem?

 

First, the front of the mount has a tendency to get unstuck, and second, the hood is an abomination. It may even be a contributing factor to problem one, because of the torque it generates when the lens is handled by it – which, considering its size, is pretty inevitable.

 

Also, I think that the new focusing mounts, those with the black helical, are better.

It is true that the front ring of the 28mm Summicron is a bit of bone headed design. I do feel that whoever decided three tiny screws should take the full torque of filter changes and changing lenses isn't somebody who gets out of the lab much to take photographs. That aside the hood doesn't bother me, I only see a bit of it through the viewfinder and unlike the common swap for a 35mm Summilux hood the original does at least mean my fingers can find the aperture ring easily.
