likalar Posted August 25, 2012 Share #1 Posted August 25, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) M9, 135 Elmar.....Larry Ellison (Oracle) puts on quite a show. I shot Thursday's World Series races with DSL AF Canon gear and long lenses, mounted on a monopod. I got excellent sharpness and focus on nearly every shot. I went back today with the smaller, lighter hand-held M9 and a single lens. Here's 3 from the M9. These are all cropped, as the 135 wasn't long enough, and I often missed the focus, but overall, it was much more fun to shoot with the M. I actually had to think. ;-) Thanks for having a look. Note: If you get a chance to see these amazing high-tech boats in action, jump on it! Super fast, lots of action, and the mishaps are almost comical. The series leaves San Francisco Sunday, returns to SF in October. Then the boats are taken apart, shipped to Venice for April 2013 races, Naples for May 2013 races. The finals, with much bigger boats, will be held in SF, USA, September 2013. Larry

J_Thompson Posted August 25, 2012 Share #2 Posted August 25, 2012 With its backlighting and the Golden Gate bridge in the background, the middle shot is outstanding, Larry. Great atmosphere.
a.j.z Posted August 25, 2012 Share #3 Posted August 25, 2012 Great photos, the second is great but I also love the action in #1 With the 135 you must have been quite close even when cropped
stuny Posted August 25, 2012 Share #4 Posted August 25, 2012 Larry - Excellent, as usual, but it's unusual to see you doing action shots.
pauledell Posted August 25, 2012 Share #5 Posted August 25, 2012 Larry, An excellent series with lots of action. Great composition, lovely colors and crystal clear sharpness. These are first class pictures. Paul
kaethe Posted August 25, 2012 Share #6 Posted August 25, 2012 Larry, these are wonderful classic racing images. Were you out by the Golden Gate Yacht club? I have been working during the week, but hope to get out there today. kaethe
likalar Posted August 25, 2012 Author Share #7 Posted August 25, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Thanks, all! Kaethe, yes, I was 100' beyond the GGYC. You will have lots of company. Windy, but a great spot to view from. The finish line is just beyond the GGYC, at the point. Stuart, yes, more action than usual for me. My "Hold still" was ignored. Andreas, luckily, the course here is set up for great viewing from shore from several spots. A few of the boats came easily within 200' of the spectators. -glad you liked the shots! kaethe Posted August 26, 2012 Share #8 Posted August 26, 2012 Larry I followed your recommendation, borrowed a 135 for my M9 and perched on the rocks of the breakwater for today's racing. Unfortunately the day was very dark and grey, although there was plenty of wind for good racing. I do not usually shoot moving objects, and that 135 is hard to focus on a grey day but here is my attempt, not nearly as sharp as yours. The last is with my 50/1.4, Spithill was very accommodating with autographs and photos with fans. Thank you all for looking. kaethe PS: for the British cheering section, Ben Ainslie gave quite a show earlier this week, with some very aggressive, crowd-pleasing tactical maneuvering! likalar Posted August 26, 2012 Author Share #9 Posted August 26, 2012 Kaethe, Really niice work! The M9 and that 135 are a bit of a challenge; you were quite up to it. Best wishes for Sunday's races. It will be shown Live on NBC, 11:30 am Sunday. Larry
