Wasdale - for Pete & Andy

Guys,

I just scanned this at Pete's request.

I have never really been able to capture the magic of this valley. But just for you ....

Rolo

Thanks; I'm glad you have struggled with it too! This is a special place for me, my Mother's house was about 8 miles away. If you have any others (particularly "different" views) stick 'em on my Wasdale thread, which is dedicated to work in progress, close but no cigar, and even crapshots (which I'm sure you don't have any of)!

One of these years I'll get there at 04:00 mid Summer's day, when the lighting on the screes will be perfect.

Rolo, caught this on a flying visit to the forum. Seeing your name, I had to check out the image. It looks to be technically excellent, and I love the light and shade in the image, but overall it's not one of my favourites. I don't sense the austere grandeur that I know to be there - partly, I think, because it's difficult to determine the scale. Close examination reveals a tree which does, indeed, tell me something of the scale of the place, but it is significant that I had to look for it. Would including more of the water help, or a wider panorama? I venture to say this as a paid-up member of the Rolo fan club. Perhaps others can point out what I'm missing.

All the best,

Chris

Chris,

If I could pitch in here; I think all of us struggle to capture the full impact of this place; on a global scale, it's small potatoes, even by Scottish standards it's below average but as Rolo said there is some sort of magic.

For those who do not know; this is the deepest water in the Lake District, the angle of the opposite bank continues down to 258 feet (79m), the valley was carved out during the last Ice Age.

The best picture of Wasdale I have ever seen, was in the reception of my E6 processor in Manchester.

A full monty panorama, taken with a plate camera, Imacon scanned and expertly stitched. It was about 10 feet wide and absolutley amazing.

That's what it takes to do this place justice. 35 x 24mm doesn't even touch the sides (let alone APS...)
