240sx Posted August 16, 2012 Share #1 Posted August 16, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hey, Might be a little bit of a stupid question but; I just got an M3 and there is one scratch near where the actual photo would be taken. My question is; will this effect my photos in any way? Would the line show up in my photos? I feel like its a really stupid question but I am slightly concerned! Thanks! If its a metal plate and the scratch is down to bright metal use a black marker to colour it in. Also check that it's not deep and jagged at the edges, which could Mark the film. wizard Posted August 17, 2012 Share #5 Posted August 17, 2012 The question is not whether the scratch will show on the photo, but whether it will be able to damage the uppermost film layer. If so, you will have a scratch running the entire length of your film. Check whether the surface of the pressure plate is still smooth. If the scratch has produced a hump or ridge on the pressure plate, it is better to change the plate for a new one. If, however, you are not able to detect any sharp edges or so protruding from the pressure plate, everything should be fine. Andy Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

If you try to use IR films like the old Kodak without the anti halation layer, it will show. HOw do I know? I used it with a Leica R which has a textured pressure plate. The first print has a beautiful waffle pattern on it. Most later cameras have a textured plate and that does not show with normal film. Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...
Messsucherkamera Posted September 4, 2012 Share #8 Posted September 4, 2012 Pressure plates can be replaced if need be. Take a look at the scratch with a negative viewing magnifier. If the scratch is superficial - not very deep, smooth with no sharp edges or metal burrs that could scratch the back of your film - I would paint it over with a black paint pen and not worry about it. If the scratch is deep with ragged edges or there are burrs present - or if it is a deep gouge - the seller should rebate back to you the cost of having the plate replaced plus shipping and insurance costs.
