digbyhp Posted August 16, 2012 Share #1 Posted August 16, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Bessa R3A, 40mm Summicron-, red filter, Tri-X @ 3200. Was reluctant to post this; 1) I don't know what that is in the bottom right hand corner (negative mark or surf wash?) 2) I think needs to be viewed as an enlarged hi-res or print - the swimmer's head just loses impact on a small presentation. Advertisement Posted August 16, 2012 Posted August 16, 2012 Hi digbyhp, Take a look here Grainy swimmer. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jaapv Posted August 16, 2012 Share #2 Posted August 16, 2012 Why did you use ISO 3200 in bright conditions? I think you have a bit of trouble with your scan as well, it looks washed-out and has grain aliasing. The blacks are certainly not black. With a red filter the contrast should jump and bite you ;)The mark looks like a spot of fixer. It is good to post it. Much better than collecting "great shot"remarks only. digbyhp Posted August 16, 2012 Author Share #3 Posted August 16, 2012 Take 2 on the contrast.
digbyhp Posted August 16, 2012 Author Share #4 Posted August 16, 2012 Why did you use ISO 3200 in bright conditions? Thanks Jaap. I like the combo of cranked up ISO, then dialled down with red filter for a contrasty, grainy pic with dramatic skies. However, I'm just working with minilab scans on a work laptop, not always the best way to get high quality web output. I really like this shot despite the technical shortcomings. stuny Posted August 16, 2012 Share #5 Posted August 16, 2012 Much better, and worth cloning out the bit of Nessie showing on the lower right.
jaapv Posted August 16, 2012 Share #6 Posted August 16, 2012 Why don't you do a Sobol on it? Ie. really crank up the contrast and leave just a hint of middle tones.
