Hello guys, I'm a happy owner of Leica M4-2 s/n 1503xxx, reading on internet, i have seen that there are many (mechanical) variants of M4-2 and M4-P cameras and soI 'd like to make a summary with your help....

i know that the firsts 100exp of M4-2 have the Leica Logo in front on the vulcanite

In the range 1469xxx the engraving on the top plate is Made in Canada....

Until 1510xxx (maybe) the bottom release have a screw then a red point

I don't know from which s/n of production the rangefinder was semplified...

I don't know from which s/n of production the rear door was made of different material...

I don't know from which s/n of production the M-4P has changed the top plate in Zinc alloy.

Can you satisfy my curiosity ?

Ciao

Giacomo

Hello Giacomo,

Me too interesting questions, thanks for Your ask!

Here's a first link to M4-P zinc:

Leica M4P with M6 Windows

In M4-2 the most attractive series is the early one with the mushroom type lens lock knob like the M4 had.

I didn't know, that there are M4-2 with non-simplyfied rangefinder...

kind regards

Thomas

I had an M4-P that was within the last 400 made, and according to Cameraquest made at Wetzlar, but it still had 'Made in Canada' engraved on the body, I suppose because all the remaining parts were shipped over to Germany.

Other than that it had flush windows, single sync socket, plastic strap protectors and a zinc top.

Hello, I know these links, but none of them answers to my questions....for example when the metal of the rear door was changed?? I read somewhere about s/n 1500000 but nobody confirm me this...if you look infact the last M4.2 and M4-P, the paint on the rear door is in many cases is "craquele'".

I have read that not all M4-2 have the semplified rangefinder is true?? If yes, when s/n there was this change?

The zinc alloy is introduced on M4-P from which roughly s/n?

Ciao

Giacomo
