I think that's unfair.

Leica is trying to address its richer clients, by frankly having fun with no design cost constraints, and also producing regular gear.

The summarily range for example, which are excellent, or the 28mm elmarit.

No one is forcing you to buy the 50mm apo, there is the summarit, summicron and summilux.

Frankly if I could afford the apo I would rather get the noctilux, but that's just me, I dont begrudge Leica making it.

Anyone interested can take the 50 APO out for a few shots at Leica Mayfair. I did just that, I wanted to dislike it as 'sharpness' and resolution are much lower on my list that other qualities, to come away pleased I will never own one..... But....

I was actually very impressed I had my 35 Summilux ASPH on at the time and their was a distinct difference in image 'quality' in a good way too. It had a density and clarity that looked right, like 'the lens had been cleaned' was the first impression. Not harsh and not digitally sharp. The whole look was impressive, again not digitally in some ways it looked more analogue. It reminded me of Fuji Velvia for it's 'density'. The colours did look richer (I assume additional contrast) and the colours looked right too as you would expect.

I wouldn't buy one but I could see why someone with £5k burning a hole in their pocket might.

Shame some have to wait, at least with a £5k budget for a 50/2 they probably have other lenses to keep them busy ;)

Well said IWC. I've not tried the lens but from the first samples I've seen around and about on the web I have to say the clarity of the shots looks really something special. A clean lens is a nice analogy. They really seem to pop.

I'm holding off purchase until I test one myself but the first samples have been really very encouraging and exciting.

If I was sponspred by Magnum/Leica, I would go for Monochrome and 50 APO as my main kit :D

it is many that could afford Noctilux, if there is somebody who uses 95% time on 50mm, then the lens holds value better than declining value of disposable digital body

Again, i m just a mortal that would not go above Summilux price level anyway. Maybe it was Leicas secret strategy to sell Summiluxes as hot cakes :)
